I'm not very knowledgeable about the system differences between the iPhone and the Instinct.  However, it would appear to me, a lay person, that since both phones use a touch screen that the same software could easily look alike.  Take for example, Gameloft's Platinum Solitaire game.  Why is it so tiny and vertically oriented on the Instinct and horizontally oriented on the iPhone?  Are the operating systems on both phones so different that the game has to appear that way on the Instinct?

The iPhone runs a modified version of Mac OSX, from what I understand.  Therefore, it supports completely different video modes and software.  That's why they have Safari and no other phone does.  One thing that people need to realize is that all phones have different "flavors" of operating systems.  By some account, the Instinct doesn't have a "OS" at all, which is untrue, but it is significantly different than any other phone out there.

Basically, no phone is like the iPhone, and no phone is like the Instinct.  That's the problem, and that's also the reason for Google's Android OS project (to provide some standardization of mobile OS in addition to other things...).  Computers have, basically, Windows, OSX, or Linux (albeit many different versions).  But, the underlying API's are basically the same across versions.  Cell phone companies, with their need for power management and low overall processing power, have to basically create OS for each phone.

Don't expect any other phone to be like the iPhone, ever, because Apple owns that realm.  While new and exciting things will always come out, the iPhone will always have its place as a true evolution in mobile tech.  I would imagine it'll take something earth-shattering to remove it from near or at the top of the heap.  I just don't want/can't afford to switch to AT&T and, honestly, am enjoying the development and quirks of the Instinct.  It reminds me of my early Linux days when it was exciting and new and people were constantly talking about it (for me, that was in 1996).

Very well put!  Yes, the iPhone deserves its recognition... heck, its probably the reason Sprint pushed to develop the Instinct.  I also enjoy pioneering the Instinct, and updates that add new features/fixes keep the phone fresh to me.

Good question...I believe it's because the Instinct is a java machine and the easiest way to get it going on the phone with all the bells and whistles was to just tweak the code from the generic java version, which also plays in portrait mode.I could be wrong but having played both versions it makes sense to me.

For this particular game a reworked, landscape version (instead of all the cards being squished into the top narrow portion of the screen) would have made for a better game.  A better solitaire game will surely crop up eventually.
