It works for me - with limited functionality, as the author said.  It's a very nice display.

I can scroll the view left and right.  The blue cursor box will come up, and I can move it around, but without a fire key I can't use it to do anything.

FYI, the only real "keys" we have available on this code are the left arrow (keycode -8), camera button (-103) and voice command button (-102).  Otherwise, you'll have to base any actions off of touch events.

There is one feature you have not seen. The blue box is in fact in floating window with 4 buttons. Only the first one is implemented (the top left one called cursor). So if you click on it, a real small cursor should appear and you should be able to select a star (by clicking on it) and get more info on it. If you click again on the cursor button, the small cursor will disapear.
Is there any problem with scrolling? Too slow or not reactive enough ?

Hello,

I am the developer of Sideralis. As I got several request for support for touch screen, I started to do adaptation. But reading this thread, I am wondering if it was really needed Smiley
Anyway, if some people wants to try the latest version v1.2.3 http://sideralis.free.fr/download.html
and send me some feedback, it will be nice.
For now, the support of touch screen is really basic, but as I don't have such phone, I would like to get some feedback before going on.
Thanks.

Thanks for popping in here. If you're interested in getting your app to work with the Instinct please download the emulator. That would help you immensely. I'm sure the members here would be happy to help you test it since you don't have an Instinct. We're always looking for new apps for our phone.

BTW, I'm sure you realize there are more and more touchscreen java capable phones being released, so putting touchscreen functionality in your apps will help with future phones as well.

btw that magenta/blue color combo on your web page is very difficult to read. Actually, it hurts my eyes to try and read it. Maybe you could change your color scheme to something a little easier on the eyes?

Feedback:  Works pretty good! When I first clicked on the blue cursor square, no cursor appeared. I was only able to move the box around the screen. After I quickly clicked it several times in a row, the cursor appeared.

Scrolling is S-L-O-W. Since we don't have arrows keys, we have to pan. The scrolling isn't set to follow the speed of the finger swipe, only the direction at the predetermined speed. Makes getting around the sky painful.

I don't know what other options are in the app. I can't read your website without getting a headache, and I didn't see a menu inside the app itself. All in all I'd say it's a pretty good start.

A full-width screen swipe only scrolls 10 degrees or less, so it would take a very long time to pan the entire horizon.  If you could make it about 3x more sensitive that would help a lot.

Like greggo, I couldn't get the cursor to come up until I tapped quite a few times inside the box.  The red cursor appears to gravitate to the closest star that's part of a constellation.  THen I could drag it to another star, though it was hard to control since there was no visual feedback that a drag was happening, and the blue box was getting in the way.

I dragged the box down to the blank area at the bottom of the screen. After you initiate the cursor, you can click on individual stars, you don't have to drag. I agree though, dragging was difficult to control. I think it may just that it's not programmed to actually drag. The app is designed for phones with buttons, so usually you're just hitting a button to jump to the next nearest star.

To the developer: Any chance of allowing a horizontal view?

Can you tell me where I can find the emulator? I had a quick look but did not find it.
Thanks.

It's the Sprint Wireless Toolkit (WTK).  You can get it from the Sprint developer pages

Hello all,

A new free version of Sideralis (v2.0.0) is available on my site.
This new version includes
    More stars (1600 vs 1000)
    A better precision in calculation
Added 2 more planets (Uranus and Neptune)
    A better help system
    Support for touch screen mobiles
A nice looking horizon view (real 3D)

Hope you will like it. And I am especially interested in the support for touch screen on your phone.
You can find it here here: http://sideralis.free.fr

Best regards, Bernard.
