My Today Screen

« on: August 21, 2008, 09:31:27 PM »

I'm an early adopter (19th June) of the Instinct...I have not had too many problems with the phone til recently.  I had the browser crashes...but I can live with that for awhile.  However, since these next round of updates, my phone has been crashing seemingly at random.  Phone locks up and then flashes to the speed dial screen.  Anyone else have the same issue?  Anyone know why this is happening....and how, if possible, to fix the issue.

The phone has a general corruption issue.  Once it starts it will only get worse.  People will tell you you just had bad luck and should take the phone back.  Of course that fixes it because the filesystem gets wiped since you get a new phone...

If you do a hard reset it will most likely work better, which is a stupid thing to have to do.

Yeah, I am definitely seeing the same crashing issues outside of the browser.  I've had various crashes when checking email, in camera mode and a few others.  All returning to the speed dial screen after the usual 20-30 second pause.  I may end up hard resetting, but agree that this a dumb thing to have to do for a temp fix.

Having the same problem that I was not having before the update.  Its not that bad but a hard reset is not what I'm looking to do.  My bluetooth is also not stable anymore. (Plantronics 510)  My Jabra BT620 Bluetooth headphones are working but just like before the sound is still somewhat faint.  I'm still extremely happy with the phone but a quick fix is not what I'm really looking for here.

it seems like this is starting to happen more frequently.... I will keep my fingers crossed that my phone will not travel this route that you and papped experienced and stick with the browser crashes only.  Undecided

I'm not having any browser issues outside of the normal.  No crashes at all.

The last few days my phone has become extremely glitchy.  I get error messages (Unable to Intitate network connection) constantly as my email is attempting to download.  Voice mail is different--apparently I have VM that cannot be downloaded, contacts come and go etc etc.  Often reverts to the speed dial, like mentioned above.  Phone was working overal OK before.  I have done one hard reset and hate to do it again.

Sprint needs to address this soon.

I am having crashing issues daily. Where it would only crash in the web browser, now, it crashes when I exit the web browser. A couple of days ago it froze when I tried to access my e-mail via the button on the main screen tab. I called and spoke with a Sprint technician, who informed me that I should be clearing the cache when I access the web and possibly to a website that used a lot of memory. She stated that the crashing issue is currently being worked on but she was surprised to hear that the issue was happening outside of the web browser. I'm not sure what's going on but I am going to give Sprint a call today because it's getting worse.  Angry

I also have noticed an increase in crashes.  My phone worked very well since I got it just over a month ago.  However, for the last week I have been seeing my phone crash in the web browser and video.  My browser wont even let me get to my bookmarks when touching the heart button.  And it will crash and kick me into the speed dial section after locking up for about 30 seconds.  Its a nuisance and more so since my bookmarks aren't available to me now.  However, I just added the Sprint TV Xtra option and have been using the video a lot more.  I was watching the US World Cup Qualifier the other night and it crashed about 4 times during the game.  this was a major hassle as it would kick me out and then it would be finicky for a few minutes so each crash was about 4 to 5 minutes to get back into the video feed.  I was in love that I could catch a soccer match on this, but it was so problematic to keep having to get back in.  Up until the last week or so, I felt I had an amazing phone that was free of all these issues I have been hearing about the last month, but now it all might be catching up to me.

obviously, any fixes and tips are very welcome.

The increase in crashing over time really points to increasing corruption.  If you do a hard reset and your phone works great for a while, then it basically proves that this is the case.  3rd party software is not an issue here like most phones because nobody really has anything installed atm (even if you had some corrupt games, it should not affect the entire Instinct filesystem.  If it does, this is an Instinct problem as well).

The truth is they won't be able to do much of anything, because it's a software/ROM issue.  They might swap out your phone, claiming it's defective.  But that is the same, temporary fix as hard resetting your phone.

okay, just to be sure, hard resetting is just taking out the battery while the phone is on, correct.  I did this, and ran the video and sure enough, it crashed out to the speed dial after 23 minutes, yeah, I timed it.  So I just wanted to be sure there is some other hard reset everyone is referring to.

That's a soft reset.  A hard reset is wiping the data on the phone back to factory default (Main > Settings > Reset).  You are basically restoring the filesystem back to the clean default, which will make the phone work better for a while.

Hello,

Noob here.  Been lurking in these boards for a little while reading what I can to see what has and has not been discussed already.  Don't know if I have done a good job, but it was the best I was able to do.

Regarding this last update, I too have been having hellish problems with my bluetooth head ear piece as well.  The Plantronics 650 device, which worked beautifully before, now has the nasty habit of dropping off in the middle of call leaving the other party listening to my voice through my shirt or pants pocket.  The fidelity of the ear piece has dropped also, I have been told.  Finally re-syncing the ear piece, which used to work like a charm, has become a real problem.  Clicking the ear piece used to instantly reconnect the device.  Now I have to remove the piece from the trusted list, turn blue tooth off and then restart in on the phone.  Then I have to re-pair the ear piece from scratch.  However even this task has become difficult as it frequently takes several tries before my Instinct sees the ear piece.

I called Tech Support today and basically all they came back with was that Plantronics devices were/are not compatible with the Instinct.  I countered that mine worked beautifully until this latest phone patch.  Several times I almost got through to them indicating that I had 2 ear pieces and had tried both with the same annoying results.  While friendly they absolutely refused to see that the common denominator here was the Instinct.  They claimed they spent lots of time looking at the Plantronics site looking for information and all they found, and thus all the could focus on, was that the Instinct was not listed as a compatible device.

Maybe it isn't, but it WAS until the latest patch.  That part of my input was not registering with them and after talking in circles with them for about 45 minutes I just gave up mumbling that maybe I would have to purchase another blue tooth ear piece.  However with this thread, especially kjohnny84's, I plan on calling back to let them know that others are indeed having similar/identical problems.

Thank you everyone for your time and your sharing.  It has helped me immensely.  Perhaps with this additional piece of data I might be able to convince them that Samsung just might be the device that is truly at fault.

I also must say my Instinct is beginning to crash more frequently. It is pretty sad. IT randomly crashes in email, browser, and messaging. It is beginning to make me angry that Sprint will do nothing.
I really do not want to do a hard reset and lose all my games (I'm a big gamer).
