Safe to replace cracked LCD on my own?

Hey so someone stepped on my phone at soccer, the lcd screen is cracked, but the phone itself isnt. Like you can only see the crack when the phone is on. The touch still works so I think my digitizer is alright. Just wondering, is it safe to try and fix it myself? I found an LCD screen online with tools for like 40 bucks. My warranty is done, but i dont wanna ruin the phone completely, should I do it or no? I'm 17btw and I never did anything like fixing a phone!
