So I take my kid to Chuck-e Cheese for a birthday party and am sitting around at the table.  It's sunday and decide to check the NFL scores for the games playing.  I take my phone out take out of sleep mode and there is a giant crack in the screen.  The screen is cracked in the inside though, when it's off you can't tell it's cracked only when the screen is illuminated.  Also, you can't see a crack in the screen it's as if it's cracked on a secondary screen inside of the phone.  Luckily I pay the $7 insurance, so I'm gonna take it to a sprint repair store tommorow and see what happens.

No it was in my front pocket, I did put my 3 year old on my lap so I'm thinking that probably did it.

Well went to the store and they gave me a card to call the insurance company that handles claims.  I called them and they sent a new one out to me maybe I'll receive it today if not then on monday.  Have to pay the $50 deductible, they added it to my bill, and send my old broken phone back.  Didn't take long to do about a ten minute phone call.

I know this is an old thread, but my screen broke as well, huge crack in, its ridiculous that I pay extra and i can't get a replacement at a sprint store.

My son just came home from school and he had the exact same thing happen to his instinct phone (cracked screen). He didn't drop it or anything. It must of had enough pressure on the screen in his pocket to crack. Nonetheless, I got on ebay and ordered a new OEM glass digitizer screen for $17 (free shipping). This also comes with the tools (screw driver, pry tool) to take the phone apart. From the research I did it's just the digitizer screen that needs to be replaced and not the LCD screen underneath the glass screen. Once I get it apart I'll verify that i am right. if the LCD screen is also broken then I will order one on ebay. They are $25 to $30 for those, but from what I read it looks like the digitizer screen. Don't be mislead and think that the LCD screen is broken just because when you turn the phone off and don't see cracks on the outer glass. Once I make my repair I'll make another post on this board. Wish me luck!

I just got the phone taken apart and the LCD screen underneath the digitizer screen WAS broken/cracked. I ordered a new LCD screen (http://www.pdasmart.com/images/xda/instinct_lcd_replacement.jpg) off of ebay for $34. Other places on the internet were charging $99 so really shop around. I could have saved myself $16 by not ordering the digitizer screen. I was going to install the new digitizer screen but it was way too much work to get the old one out of the phone bezel. I found it weird that the digitizer screen (http://www.pdasmart.com/images/xda/instinct_touch_Repair.jpg) didn't get broken when it got stepped on. It was a little nerve racking taking the phone apart because of all the little parts and the tiny cables that need to be unplugged. I used the following instructions located here:

http://www.rapidrepair.com/guides/instinct/instinct.html

One of the problems I ran into was the new LCD screen I ordered off of ebay DID NOT have the small microphone soldered to it. The microphone is a little black circle that hangs from the bottom of the LCD screen chip board. Without the mic you will not be able to use the phone to talk. I went down to Radio Shack and purchased a soldering gun for $8. The soldering pins are very small on the board so be careful. I heated up the soldering posts on the old phone and pulled the mic off. Then with some help from my wife I had her hold the phone while I attached the mic to the new LCD board. I didn't need to buy any solder because the new board has enough on it to heat up and reattach the mic to them. Before putting the phone back together I held the battery in place and started up the phone and made a phone call to make sure the mic worked. Nonetheless it did! I put the phone back together and presto it is almost like new.
