Hello all, this is my first time ever write up.  I’m just hoping to contribute back to the community which has been a great help.

This write-up applies to Telus Instinct products in Canada.  I’d like to thank many other contributors in Instinct-Samsung.com as well as in Sprintusers.com.

************Be aware, you may lose your contacts as a result of following the instructions specified here.  ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR CONTACTS AND FILES THAT YOU ARE MODIFYING!*****************
Here it goes.

1.   After you purchased Samsung Instinct, you will quickly realize that the package does not include the phone driver/software which Sprint users have received.  That can easily be solved by going to the Sprint support website and download the driver software.

Here are the links:

Windows XP, 2000: http://www.sprint.com/assets/downloads/windows_xp/executables/Sprint_Mobile_Broadband.msi

Windows Vista: http://www.sprint.com/assets/downloads/windows_vista/executables/Sprint_Mobile_Broadband.exe

Once you are done downloading, run it!  It may ask you to restart; feel free to do so.

2.   Now you need a software to view the file system.  Bitpim or TPST can be used for the same purpose.  I tried both, but personally, bitpim is a lot easier to use than TPST.  If you insist on using TPST, there are a lot of posts in How To… section.

For now, let’s stick to bitpim and download the latest version from the following:
Windows XP, 2000, Vista:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/bitpim/bitpim-1.0.6-setup.exe?download
Just like before, run it and complete the installation.

3.   Now, you need to plug your USB cable that came with the package to your computer and the phone.  Windows will recognize your phone and will be detected as a modem from Samsung.  On the phone, it may ask whether you want to connect to the computer.  Don’t be tricked into it!  If you say yes, your phone will be detected as a storage device by windows and will not be able to communicate using Bitpim or other CDMA software.  If you fell for it, repeat this step by unplugging USB cable.  For the rest of us, run Bitpim software.  Initially, there will be a popup supposedly guiding you to detect your phone; skip it!
When you get to the main screen, in the menu bar, you should see File, Edit, Data, View, Debug, Help.  Go click on “Edit”, then “Detect Phone”.  It will take a few seconds, and reply saying “Found Other CDMA phone on COM[Some Number ]”   After successful detection, you should be able to see a green circle and “Other CDMA phone on COM[Some Number] – Detected”

4.   You are ready to see the file contents in your instinct.  Any other features in BitPim WILL NOT work, but do not be afraid, we just need to use the file system feature.  Go to “View” then click on “View Filesystem”  Only change after you click on it will be that, on the left side of the screen, you will see “Filesystem” icon on top of “Log”

5.     Click on “File System”, expand the folder to /brew/mod/obigo/.  You should be able to see _telus_policy.txt  Download the file by right clicking on the file and "Save...", maybe on your desktop.  Once you have the file on your desktop, MAKE SURE you back-up the file by making a duplicate.  Once you backed up the file, open the _telus_policy.txt, erase everything and replace with the following.

REMEMBER, THIS IS FOR TELUS INSTINCT ONLY.  BELL HAS DIFFERENT PARAMETRES

============================================================== (again, do not include this line)

Save the file, close notepad.  Now drag this updated _telus_policy.txt file and copy it to the same folder you got this from (which is /brew/mod/obigo/)

Reboot your phone.

5.      Open BitPim again.  Expand to the folder /brew/mod/obigo/jas/index
Under that folder, you will see text files with sequential numbers starting from 1.txt (e.g. 1.txt, 2.txt, 3.txt…)  Next number you don’t see is what you need to remember.   If the number skips in the index folder, first number you don’t see is the number you need.

Now, you need .jas and .jad files to install java application.

Let’s try Opera Mini.
http://www.operamini.com/download/pc/samsung/samsung_m620_upstage/

Download both jad and jar files onto your desktop.  Once that’s done, you must rename BOTH files to the number (same number for both files) that you found (or don’t find) from the above.
In BitPim, go to the following folder: /brew/shared/jas/temp/install/ and place both files in there.
Wait for the green light indicating file transfer’s complete, and then reboot your phone by pressing down on the hold button on the phone.  If the program installs properly, it should turn off on its own while booting up and you have to turn it on AGAIN.

Once you get used to the steps, you can install multiple programs/games at once, but different programs with different, yet sequential numbers of course.

5.   Enjoy!

Feel free to post any questions.  Sorry there are no pictures to assist you, but having beer in the middle of the day makes me really lazy and don’t want to do all the uploads to the webserver and link those.  Maybe I’ll get motivated for unknown reason and decide to improve this a bit with pictures/videos.

I already have this in another thread but what the hell.  It’s the only video I have Tongue

Alright, I have both files downloaded for the Opera Mini from the link provided. Now the numbers in the folder go 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 so I need to rename the .jad and .jar files both '9' right? I was able to name the .jar file to just '9' but I'm not allowed to with the .jad file. It has to be '9.jad' because when I try to just name it '9', it tells me that it will become 'unusable.'

Any help, please?

Alright, it worked. Nice. Now I'm just figuring out how to use Opera Mini. It's fast.

Now, if I want to add another app, I do the exact same thing but name the two files '10' right? (Opera Mini both named '9')

Also, if you want to delete an app that you've put on the phone, can you delete it from the phone like you normally would or do you have to go into bitpim and do it?

Thanks.

yes, name it '10.jad'.

and you can just delete like a normal app. but remember, next time you add a program, there will be a number missing in the sequence.  So you have to use that missing number for a new program

Oh ok. So if I have a program installed using the number 11, for example, and I delete it, I'd have to name the next program I install 11. That's correct?

Just wondering, every time you add an app, does it erase your contacts?

That is correct.  and NO, you won't lose contacts everytime you add a program...unless something else is going on on your side :S

I just tried installing Guitar Hero III mobile and it didn't install. I named both files '10.' I'm going to try it once more just to make sure. If it doesn't work, I'll try another game.

Aside from games, what different apps have you installed?
