Hello everyone,

I am new to this board.  Stumbled upon it while doing research for 2 weeks now.  Well, I just got the Instinct about 2 weeks ago.  However, I haven't been able to use it yet since my billing cycle ends on the 28th (corporate discount cycle) and I don't want to get pro-rated.  So anyways, I have been researching like a mad man (seriously, I have never researched this much even for school!) after reading about certain shortcomings for the Instinct.  I have also come across why the Instinct is (or isn't) better than the iPhone 3G.  I am sure all of you have probably been asked many times, but seriously, researching has only made me even more confused.  And I can never find a unbiased opnion.  It's always either "you iPhone fanboy" or "your Instink sucks!"  Getting back to the topic at hand, all this talk of the Instinct's browser and 3rd party apps (lack of) is making me seriously think I made the wrong choice.  However, I have also read people post about how much greater the Instinct is in terms of features the iPhone doesn't have.  Now, I haven't been able to use the Intinct, but I have tried my friend's iPhone, so I am asking for an honest opinion on the Instinct's features.  Does it make it that much better than the iPhone?  For instance, I believe you can watch shows on the Instinct.  How is the quality?  Ditto for the other features.  And also, what is your opinion on future updates for certain aspects of the Instinct such as it's browser and even 3rd party apps.  I have recently found out (much to my friend's bragging) that the iPhone is going to get some games specifically developed for it.  I guess I can live without the games, but if the browser is really as bad as it is said to be, I feel like I might as well stick with a regular phone since I bought this phone so I can browse the internet when I am bored.  And what about instant messaging?  Will we be getting it anytime soon?  Sorry for the many questions.  After going to several forums with iPhone/Instinct owners catfighting each other has made me want to ask for real, unbiased opinions on these issues.   Cry

I have read half of it so far, and i must say, it does give me a lot of information in terms of side by side comparisons.  thanks tim! Cheesy  I guess the only question I have left is regarding the updates.  In all honest opinion, what does everyone think of future updates regarding the web browser and 3rd party apps?

Heres my shot at this for you.

The iphone is great w/ out any doubts. It has some very unique features and the browser is just simply amazing. The screen is a perfect size and has a lot more colors and higher resolution then the instinct. As far as applications go, the iphone does have a large variety to choose from. You'll have a lot of options, but a lot of the applications are terrible. Also you do have to pay, sometimes, a decent amount of $$$ for them.

The iphone is an amazing ipod. It does that very very well. As a phone, ehhh not so much. When it comes down to phone features, the iphone lacks a lot. Simple things are missing, such as MMS, Camcorder, etc. The GPS on the iphone 3G is very cumbersome and has a lot to be desired.

All in all the iphone is just a revolutionary device and what it does, it does great, but what it lacks, it completely LACKS. The screen is beautiful, the interface is snappy and the browser is amazing. The apps that come on the phone are useful and work as they are to, and the 3rd party apps are a hit or miss.

Now the instinct:
The instinct has some great features as well. But first. The screen isn't as good, lower res and not as many colors. When you don't get TRUE black, you end up with some distortions. The screen on the instinct is plastic, not a HUGE deal, but it lacks the glass screen the iphone has.

In terms of the instinct as a phone.. Its amazing. The thing just tares the iphone apart in this aspect. The menu system is very snappy and allows you to make a phone call very quickly, send a picture with ease, and the keyboard allows for easier txt input. The instinct has a very simple but effective OS. Not as Snazzy as the iphones, but very effective. The applications the come on the instinct in theory are amazing, but in real world use can be a bit glitchy. A lot of this is being fixed as we speak with strategic updates being applied to every instinct.

The GPS on the instinct is where this phone shines. Its very simple and the possibilities are endless with it. You can locate almost anything if not anything with the GPS in a few clicks. Its accurate and compares to $400 Standalone GPS units on the market. This BLOWS away the GPS on the iphone.

The news apps, sports app, etc. Are very reliable. They allow the user to simply click and read with out hassle and searching. For sports fanatics the Instinct is a must over the iphone. Set your teams and go. Once you've set your favorite teams, you'll able to view scores, news, statistics, video clips, and much more. The Sprint TV has A LOT to be desired. Its very choppy and pixelated. Some channels are fine and some aren't. Its good in theory though and should have an update very soon.

Now to the one thing we all are waiting for, the updates. The instinct is Sprints baby and it WILL be updated with out a doubt. You WILL be able to have such a LARGE selection of applications, that by the time you've tried all of Java apps you would have aged 5years. This of course will require you to add a policy.txt hack (that way the applications dont have to be certified) which is a very simple hack.
IMHO Sprint will not release an update for Standard Java until after Aug 29th (the end of the Developer contest) this is to ensure that all applications that are being developed will be specifically developed for the instinct. They WILL in fact release the update though. This will allow for the use of a browser that is only Second to the iphones, Opera Mini.
Sprint will have an application store, just like Apple, and we believe you will have a lot to choose from. The fact that this phone is java though, will enable you to use a selection of Instant Messaging tools, email tools, calendar tools, etc. So expect to have more of a selection than the iphone.
The current web browser on the instinct is worthless. The company that made it Teleca is a fly by night company that will soon go under (IMO). They created a web browser quickly, cheaply, and terribly. I wouldn't worry though, Opera Mini will satisfy all of our needs soon enough.

I've had both phones and it comes down to this.
The iphone is solid, proven, and works great. Period. Its custimization is amazing, the interface is amazing, the browser is revolutionary, and the music player is of course great. Thats what you get in a nutshell with the iphone. A beautiful device that does those features very well. But this comes at a very high cost. This phone doesn't keep giving, it keeps taking, money that is. You'll be paying such a high price for the service, let alone applications, that you might need a second job. Is it a great phone? With out a doubt!! Its amazing.

The instinct is the only contender with the iphone, period. Im in the business. I've been doing mobile reviews for almost 7 years. I hate when people who are inexperienced say that the Dare or other products even can compete. I've even heard a reviewer (phonedog.com) say the dares touch screen is better. This amazes me. I have the Dare. That statement is very untrue. You want a limited phone? Get the Dare. Its like buying a mid-priced hooker. They look great, the price is right, but in the end whos getting f**ked? You got a good deal, but now u got the herps.. Not good.

Anyways, the instinct is great, feature wise its packed and has a lot more to come. The phone doesn't perform as quickly as the iphone does in instances like opening applications, etc. The screen isn't close to the iphones. There are a lot of things that make thsi phone annoying, but they are being fixed. Which would I choose? The iphone or the instinct? Humm its tough, I love my iphone and I love my instinct. What do I carry with me every day? Well I carry my Treo and my instinct. My instinct can get me outta a jam quickly, allow me to goto point a and b very smoothly and provide me with some usable multimedia to keep me busy. The iphone just can't do that. I find myself toying with my instinct more then the iphone. If I were going on a date with some hot chick, id take my iphone just because its a known phone that makes u look "cool". It does provide me with some features, just not enough. It does provide more then others, but after using my instinct and treo, i can't justify taking the iphone.

Sorry for the long review, but there ya go. If you have any other questions ask away!

I also want to state a lot of things also. The Dare is a great phone by all means. It has potential, but when I hear people review the Dare as it can even contend with the iphone or instinct it does bother me. Take the Dare for a spin for a couple weeks and then tell me if it can contend. The Dare is a great phone. Has an amazing camera and the customization is great. Thats where it ends, completely. Smaller screen, applications will never come, gps is weak, and the browser is so so. The touch screen is nice, but lacks so much responsiveness. I can't believe sites like phonedog.com contend that the touch screen on the dare is better then the instincts.

Be aware of phonedog.com. Great for seeing a product. Great for unboxing, NOT great for reviews. They must make every Carrier and MFG happy. That way they get more phones, and sell more service. Its a shame, but they have a business first.

Sorry about bringing the Dare up, but that needs to be cleared up very quickly. I'm sure some will disagree and some will agree. My opinion doesn't matter period, its what you think. I'm just offering experience and personal experience with these devices. I've had most of them and thats why i can speak about them Smiley

Read your whole review and loved it. I really like how you tossed in some comedy with the above.

Great Job

tnt, that was thus far the best, unbiased opinion I have read without a "DIE APPLE FANBOY/INSTINK" as the closing sentence.  Anyways, after going to the site tim recommended and reading your thoughts, I am leaning towards keeping the Instinct.  Besides, from the limited things I can do on it right now, I see potential.  But I really do hope that what you said about the Instinct being Sprints baby and the updates that are bound to happen really do happen.  I don't really care and can live with lesser resolutions/screen size/etc. compared to the iPhone.  But what I do care about is Sprint's claim that this phone can beat the iPhone in so many of the aspects that it touted.  I do hope Sprint works on issues that the customers have brought up so far, such as the browser, instant messaging and other third party apps.  Anyways, thanks for your opinion.  I was getting really tired of the catfighting between the Instinct/iPhone owners.  Really, I didn't and still don't see why it is so hard for them to talk about the pros and cons without getting so defensive -_-

BTW, you don't think the Instinct will impress the ladies?  Because, you know, I really want to whip out the phone and have the opposite sex become putty in my hands Cheesy

haha ya as do we all! I was at the bar umm trying to think what night it was (thats how good of a night it was haha).. I believe it was Tuesday, but that doesn't matter. Anyways I had my Instinct on me. A pretty smokin girl asked me "OMG is that the iphone". I wanted to say "Yea it is", but I said "No its the instinct". Thats like saying "I'm 30 and I live with my mom still". The response was "Ohh". I wanted to get geeky with her, but I let it be. Most chicks dig the iphone b/c of its popularity and beauty. They look at it as just another accessory in their purse. While us geeks look at it as a multi-purpose tool. Anyways to say the least I put my iphone in my glove compartment so that when I decide to go out, I can whip it out and get some easy tail.

Ha no really the instinct doesn't have the "Wowness" that the iphone does. Thats a fact.

if girl's aren't attracted to me for my instinct...meh...ill just have to get a ferrarri to compensate.  Oh yeah, can I ask you one more question btw?  You spoke about a policy.txt hack.  Well, I am the biggest newbie when it comes to this stuff.  What is it and how would it work.  More importantly, how would I even get it into my phone haha.

The _policy.txt hack is this:

Sprint requires all applications to be signed and certified. What does this mean? Well to large companies nothing, they have the money to pay for certification. What does it mean to the hobbyist or the small guys? You'll be dishing anywhere from $500-$5,000 to get application certified.
Why does Sprint want to do this? To ensure that unauthorized applications don't jack up your device. Can it happen? Ehh chances are very slim. Either way its Sprints way to make sure you aren't going to brick your phone with an application that is made just to do that.
How do you go around this? Well heres how:

First two things you'll need.
1) Your MSL. To obtain this, Call sprint and say that you want it. If that doesn't work then call again and say that your phone stopped receiving calls. They then have to give it to you (Of course when they try to make u reprogram your phone, just pretend u are)
2)QPST. To obtain this goto isohunt.com and download the torrent. If you don't have a client to download torrents get it from utorrent.com
The next step:
Goto Start>Programs>Accessories> Notepad
Copy and paste this:

Now with this hack you wont see anything done to your phone. Once the 3rd party apps start coming you'll see people on this forum complain that they aren't able to download/use the app.. Thats b/c they don't have this hack done.

Btw on QPST Once you connect your phone via USB and open up the explorer it'll has for a Service Code.. Thats where you put the MSL in Smiley

I had the ku990 which is an upscaled version of the 'dare' i had it for 2 month and it bothered me so much i returned it to get a partial refund. Paid $500. It LACKS many many features. the most annoying thing I remember was the the call/back/end buttons, it's located so low it's difficult for me to navigate my thumb there, I dropped it a few times due to the fact I was trying to use the buttons. I was worried about this on the instinct, but luckily it's touch sensitive. That phones video capture was amazing though. I was shocked phonedog prefer the dare over instinct.

TNT , thanks for one of the best reviews.

Hey any time! I enjoy helping people out! I actually PMed the owner or admin of this site and offered my assistance in helping the site out (for free just to kill time). I provided him with my experience and background as an editor for mobileslash.com, owner/editor/designer of bornmobile.com (sold) and owner/editor of gamers fantasy board (sold). Also I believe i explained to him how involved of a member I am at howard forums. Been a member there for almost 6 years.

Now with a wrap sheet like that, you'd think they'd kill to have me on board. Guess not :p

Anywho.. If anyone else needs help, even though I was rudely not even responded back to, I'll gladly offer my helping hand Cheesy
