I've been able to install most of the games listed here

http://www.*****.com/forums/rpost.pl?b-instgames/

exceptions are Guitar Hero III and a couple I can't remember for now.

Point is, yay, games.

I can't get games to install using any site. Everything works up to where you open the browser from the text link. When the browser loads it just says "Requested page cannot be displayed."

Read my previous post about installing files manually through bitpim.  Attempting to open java on browser will not work.

I really don't understand any of it. About bitpim, about editing _policy.txt. I'll just do some reading I guess, otherwise I'll destroy my phone.

Thanks for the info.

I just installed Opera Mini 4.1 on Telus Instinct without any problems.

I was o.O looking at how fast it loads webpages, but as everyone else, I was not able to get a pop-up keyboard.  But following to links work as a charm!

http://www.operamini.com/download/pc/samsung/samsung_m620_upstage/
If it's anything like the US phone, it will install and load ok the first time, then won't load after that.

Well, it works perfectly (again, except for the keyboard part).  I'm trying to load video...but gotta find a link first.

Are you sure? Could you please turn off/on your phone and try launching opera again? It does not work for Sprint and Bell users.

Here is an explanation someone offered:

You're completely right. I've experienced the same exact behaviour as well.

What I'm referring to is when Sprint, Samsung, and Qualcomm all finally roll out the final missing link.

The reason 4.1 runs fine the first time is that the complete instruction set is not loaded. Essentially it is bypassing the normal instruction set because a successful installation should mean compatibility on the device. Of course that's assuming the device was compatible to begin with, which Opera has stated the instinct is not at this time. Once an attempt is made on the second running of the program it asks for a certain instruction, which by the programs logic should exist but since it's trying to call up an instruction set that doesn't exist then the natural behaviour of the program would be to 'hang' until the program is given the proper instruction. And I base this off my experience with failed programming I've done in the past. You're not going to get full functionality out of a program that never took into consideration that some phone developer was going to omit portions of the standard code. Clearly this is the case. All programs work the same. Absence of instruction leads to chaotic, or in Opera's case, stalled and errant behaviour.

If it does indeed work for you the second time without hanging, I wonder if it is because of a different installation method that you outlined?

It was rebooted about 30 times since I installed opera mini.

I gotta leave now, but i'll probably take a video of its operation if you really wanna see it.

My guess for my phone getting opera operational is probably due to the different coding from telus (in an attempt to brick the phone).

Again, i'm not a programmer or anything close, so I cannot explain it.

But I listed what I've done before including modified policy text file, so you should try it.

If people still are having trouble, I might actually take screenshots and put up detailed instructions.

i've been following this thread and I want to confirm the Upstage version of Opera Mini 4.1 does the exact same thing as any of the other versions of OM on the US version of the Instinct. It completely hangs.

Tought luck for the US market. We'll have to wait until the powers that be roll out the fix.

Took me awhile to get this started.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=derjUOLdXF0

I started by loading Opera Mini and ran couple of websites through links, followed by showing the OM version info.

Then I rebooted my phone, then repeated the process again.

Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Overall, is it a tricky process to get it installed and working? I might try it this weekend if I get a chance.

One more thing, do all of those other applications work and did you install them all the same way?

Thanks.

Yes, they all work properly except a couple of games which crash in the mid game.

Same process was used to install all programs.

Right on. Is it a tricky process? You can 'brick' your phone doing it, can't you?

Thanks kbacon for the video.

I tried installing opera 4.1 with direct upload via bitpim. It installed fine but I got the same freeze at 75% of loading when I run it second time. Seems like for Bell users it makes no difference whether we use bitpim to install apps or rumkin.

Since I am with Bell I couldn't use the _policy.txt file you posted because it is very different than mine. So I edited my _policy.txt file to allow for all permission for all apps. That got rid of some annoying popups asking me to confirm every time an application tried to access the internet but I didn't help the opera freeze. What else did you have to modify in your policy file to avoid the freeze?

I'm doing a complete write-up on this right now; can you send me your policy.txt? or just post it here?

PM'd you the original _policy.txt file as it came with my Bell Mobility Instinct.

If you are doing the installation write-up (thanks for that!!) perhaps you should make sure you are referring to the Telus phone. The installation instructions would be different for Bell since we 1) can use rumkin to install opera which is easier than via bitpim and 2) our _policy.txt file is different than that of Telus.
