I have a mac book and I tried to use the instinct as a modem but when I go under options for internet, the modem/dial network is grayed out so I cant click it as an option. It seems the mac does not recognize the phone as a modem option.  Any advice? And if you know how, please explain SIMPLE.  Just got the mac and Im not a very knowledgeable about the ins and outs of computers and terminology. I do medicine, lol not computers.
thanks

Okay,
First thing is first.  Have you followed the standard instructions to set the phone up as a modem?  It does not work out of the box as one.  If you have not done this yet, I suggest following the instructions at the URL below.  If you have already done this just say so.

http://www.nateclark.com/articles/2008/09/02/samsung-instinct-tethered-to-mac-os-x-as-a-sprint-3g-wireless-modem

EDIT:  Don't worry it is very simple, and you don't need to do much on the Mac at all.  The bulk of the work is done on the phone itself.  Once the phone is setup into modem mode you can plug it right in and the Mac recognizes it instantly.  No drivers or other such windows fluff.

Have not done this yet. Let me start it and will get back to you..   thanks. I just assumed since mac's are so smart it would/should pick it right up.

never miind i got it
here is a much easier way to do it
1. Turn on Bluetooth on ur macbook and phone
2. set them up and when it asks you for number, put #777
3. put ur sprint.com username and password(go make one if u dont have one)
4. under data card choose Sprint PCS
5. then try connecting then a page should come up on ur phone showing RX Signal and TX Signal
there u go!

The downside with bluetooth it is very rare that you will get a signal good enough to give you anything but slightly better then dial up speeds.  Even at usb 1.1 you have a much bigger pipe from the phone to the computer if you go by cable.

Actually if the phone shipped with the PAM (phone as modem) enabled, it would be just plug it in, type your username and password, and go.  You don't have to do much on the Mac side other then plug it in.

Trying to make this as non-technical as possible.  Think of a pipe.  With bluetooth the pipe (connection) between the phone and computer is very small so only a small amount of water (data) can travel down it.  Using the USB cable you have a much larger pipe so you can push more water (you can get data between the two devices) quicker.

kk i got it to work
flightrn911 this is what u do
1. plug ur instinct to ur mac
2. drag the drive(its on ur desktop) to the trash to eject it
3. then go to system prefs and in the search box type "modem" then click on the one that says "dial modem now"
4. then it'll ask u for the phone number put #777
5. put ur username and password from sprint.com
6. for modem type put Sprint PCS(its a drop down menu)
7. on ur phone go to dialer and type ##332846368# (##DEBUGMENU#)
8. go to Toggle NAI and click off modem NAI
9. then go on ur mac and click dial and it should work!

That means you must have already recieved the latest update.  It unfortunately removes that access code.  You are going to have to read elsewhere in this forum for how to get past it.  I would suggest reading this thread:
