I live an a non EVDO network area and when trying to use the GPS function it ramps up to 50% and then tells me "GPS signal weak.  Find better sky view."  I have talked to tech support about it and they told me that the gps will only work in the EVDO network.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

yes! The same thing used to happen to me on my Razr and I spoke to Sprint who said: 'Oh yeah, GPS only works in an EVDO area'. To which I said: 'well why didnt you say that when you sold it to me, and told me all about the great GPS, while we were both standing in a store located in an area it wouldnt work!'

The real bummer is when you are traveling from an EVDO area to somewhere you've never been to before in the Boonies, and then your GPS gets cut off or you try and come home, and it wont load. I recall a 40 mile meander through the Rocky Mountains when this happened to me. I wasnt happy...

This is because the phone does not actually have a GPS chip in it.  What it is, is called CDMA Triangulation.  basically it triangulates your location in reference to your position in between the towers.  It does not actually use the sky, I think that is so horrible that they actually put that on the screen.    It's a bit misleading, but you can still get accuracy within 3 meters from cdma triangulation.  however the 1Rxxtt just does not have the strength to triangulate your position. thats why you need the EVDO.

As long as you are in a Sprint service area, navigation will work whether you're on the EV-DO network or the vision.  If you're roaming, you won't be able to start a navigation session.  This has been my personal experience.  The navigation works for me whether I have 1 bar or 5.  It has glitches every once in a while, but nothing major.  If you are having that much trouble, I would take it back and have them swap phones.

Same thing happened to me.

Power the phone down, remove the battery and wait about 2 minutes. Replace the battery, power up, and try again.

This is a standard Sprint troubleshoot for the Instinct, followed by a data profile update. Give it a try.
