SO if this is true GPS why do I need a phone signal for it to work?

Because your phone did not come with the optional Satelite Dish.  You have to be on the SaskaBellMobile network for that feature...

You're phone uses triangular algorithms to locate your position.

I think it has both true and assisted GPS.  Most Sprint apps use the assisted GPS because it's faster, but it's also less accurate.

Well, first I believe that the GPS signal is acquired via the data signal, not the phone signal.  Not 100% on that one.

Second, because the GPS uses three different tower signals to coordinate your location, in tight spaces when one or even two towers temporarily lose you, one can carry the load for a short bit.

The phone probably caches a bit of the route... if you're in a tunnel, you're not going to get a gps satellite signal either. Wink

you need a data signal for the maps within the GPS app and for triangulation when a GPS signal is not present
