Does anyone know what the time line is for compliance? I think if it's a short time frame, then we'll be getting that keyboard soon. If not, then we are back to where we were, just because Sprint was already working on the keyboard anyways.

They are working on the keyboard issue, and it will be fixed soon.  This will open the doors to Opera, google maps, IM, and other programs that need the keyboard fixed.  The legal issues are interesting though...

Do some searching on the site, and also look at the Sprint Developer's forums (just type sprint developers in google and it will give u the link).  This keyboard issue has been discussed alot.  Sprint officially said they are working on it.

Sounds like a strategic move by Sprint to get the developers to use the Instinct Widget Library.  Once the contest is over, the LCDUI will be released.  This will lock down many of the custom apps to the Instinct device only.  This would allow them use these proprietary apps to drive up sales.

Yup I'm def. agreeing with that. If they were to come into compliance with java standards right now, they would be giving away $20k to a company or person who's java app will work for every java phone out there.

I'm going to bed right after Aug 29th, we will see an update. If they were to change things right now, itd be a marketing disaster.

That must be the update due at the end of august. they were smart to do that. not only do they get a lot of instinct only apps they get them in a short amount of time. thus getting their offerings closer to what the iphone already has.

Sprint is getting smarter Smiley Watch out everyone  Tongue

I'm pumped for this.  I did the Opera Mini emulator and was in love.  Liked it so much I installed it and tried the keyboard for it as well.  That sucked, but I can understand that with a landscape view and the standard keyboard... we could be in heaven with this phone realllllly quick...

Now if only we could get some more enhancements on the camera Smiley  (Sorry I digressed there for a second)

i 100% agree with this thread.  In that article it clearly states that the phone HAS the LCDUI (keyboard interface) written into the phone, it simply is not turned on.  Meaning it has the capability to do so and why the lack of comments from sprint seem to be oddly not-approaching this issue first and foremost.  The application updates recently do not seem to be doing much other than making them work a bit more effortlessly with the sprint network.  They put a crappy browser on the phone to simply satisfy the needs of consumers until after august, in which when LCDUI is activated opera mini will be then available (probably 4.1 will work seemlessly too).  The new apps strictly written for the Instinct will be almost a proprietary implementation to only the Instinct... and who knows this might be a good thing.  But the fact remains it is in a selfish act from Sprint.  I will almost bet everything I own to hold true to the fact that we will see the LCDUI update immediately following the end of the developers contest.  Sprint will not lose out assuming these simple facts... 1)  the tech savy people will want, wait, and wish for this feature which will be eventually activated... 2)  the non-tech savy sprint users will just be impressed with the built in browser and how it does more than there last phone.

Sprint is doing this to boast sales of the Instinct with (what they are hoping...) useful applications that use independent minds to create what they really want, and that will be different and proprietary to Sprint's Instinct.  Hence the fact they altered and built the OS themselves.  They implemented these restrictions on purpose and will un-restrict them when they are ready.  Anyone who says this is really a hard feat to accomplish (getting a java standard keyboard to work) is simply not the case.  Neither was the purpose of putting a crappy/under-developed browser on the phone.  They simply did not worry about the browser... because why would they?  They wouldn't want to develop a great browser which would probably not be on par with opera and would be a waste of R&D to code it.  All the other functions of the phone work GREAT.  Some server errors here and there, but for the most part the phone only locks up on webpages and the silly text glitch.  Sprint TV has been updated twice and even the news videos are working more streamlined.  I think most of the glitches are worked out EXCEPT browser function and the Java keyboard.  These 2 facts alone leave me to think this really was a planned venture and it will all be resolved within a month.... mark my words, lol.

further I found this excerpt from a Sprint ADP Team Member in reference to posters asking how to develope apps knowing the LCDUI compliance would be released 'in a month'...

source link:  http://developer.sprint.com/show_thread.do?forumId=378&searchBy2=MSG_PARENT_ID&searchValue2=-1&searchBy3=MSGFORUM_FORUMID&searchValue3=378&ps=10&pn=1&threadid=26187&sortCol=MSG_AUDIT_MOD_DT&sortDirection=0

:

"I'll stay out of the LCDUI timeframe part of this post since that is not my doing or control.

I'm surprised in the post from developers saying how they can't build an app for this device because it does not have LCDUI. Yes there is no LCDUI support today, but this doesn't mean there is not a UI at all. If you look at the preloaded apps on the device like Navigation, weather, live search, news etc these are all apps that developers had to spend a little extra time working on the UI, which they did and it paid off because they apps look REALLY nice.

I don't want to come off the wrong way here, yes LCDUI support is nice and it makes it easy to take your "same ol" app from other phones and just load it but even if you had LCDUI support today on Instinct the UI of your app would look out of place as compared to the rest of the UI in the device because you wouldn't have all the unique controls etc.

Having to develop for a "new ui" is not new to any of the Mobile developers, for example blackberry supports LCDUI, but if you are going to write a serious app you will use the blackberry UI instead.

So my suggestion is to give the SIWL a chance in your app, from the post on this site and working with the Sprint partners most developers who are serious about getting their content on this device and in front of the VERY large base of paying customers have already rolled up their sleeves. Also one of the main reasons we are hosting a contest is the fact that the UI is different on this device and we are looking for some really solid and compelling apps to offer our customers.

For those working on apps for the contest I look forward to seeing your entries.

If you start using the SIWL please post any question to the forums where we can assist you.

Ryan Wick
Sprint ADP Team "

Take it however you want, but I think he's saying "sure, no LCDUI today, but there is our Sprint UI!!! USE THAT!!! then worry about the LCDUI once we get this stuff out to paying customers!!!!"  Hmmmm.....

we might need to start send email to sun complaining about lack of java support since sun already was threatening legal action. that may light a fire under sprint. what gets me is thay the article says that the support is in there and it just isn't activated. sounds like we are being lied to. sprint just didnt as many entries in the contest as they would like imho. great phone but i would really like to be able to use opera and the thousands of other available programs.

Define soon.  I have been reading this forum for 3 solid weeks now and I have read back to July, when promises were made, then broken, then new promises were made (by Sprint), then broken.

I wouldn't be surprised if this Java issue continued into early 2009.

Well I figure if the winners are not being announced till Oct. 10th, it should be sometime after that.  They will give winners a few weeks to showcase their results... then release the update to everyone after that.

At least that's my thoughts.....  IMO if they release the update before they give the results, all the new non-instinct only programs that will fly out (opera, firefox mobile?, ect..) will overshadow all the time spent by the developers in the contest - making the contest pointless.

I think this makes sense...?
