Here's something I noticed a few weeks ago while on vacation:
I was in the middle of nowhere, with a clear sky view.  No cell service on the sprint network.  My garmin GPS has my location locked down to within 5 feet.  My instinct complains of a "weak gps signal" and to move outdoors.  does the instinct really have *true* GPS, or does it just use cell towers to approximate your location based on signal strength from various towers?

From the guys at Telenav:

The application pulls the GPS from the built in receiver that’s in your device. When the device can’t find satellites, is when you get the Weak/No gps error, cannot get current location, gps issues.

Guys at telenav suggest pulling your battery for 30 seconds and see if that doesn't resolve the issue

Plus, we have "assisted" gps(agps).  We have a gps chip, but I don't think it will function without network service.

Then someone on their forum said Telenav isn't on the Instinct,
But that it's Sprint's navigation with the telenav branding on it...

But on the Sprint page at the bottom...it either confirms or doesn't...
guess it's how you interpet it...

the only time I get a weak gps is when my battery drops below 60%, when the light turns yellow.  if I don't move, swap the batteries to a fresh one, it works perfectly again.

my only real issue isn't weak gps problem, its the processor issue.  the gps locks up when "finding traffic" initiates, and I can go a couple of miles before it kicks back in.  its ok if I'm going far, but this usually happens when I'm just going less than a few miles.

That's all fine and dandy, but it shouldn't be AGPS only.  I'm cool with it for use when in cities (for multipath issues), but when you're out in the sticks, or in an area w/o network coverage, it should fall back to standalone GPS.  oh well. maybe the touch pro 2 or InstinctQ (or Pre) will work differently.

The only phones i've ever owned that had apps that used standalone gps were nextel phones.  Trimble outdoors had apps for them, and you could use them with no service whatsoever.(it might take 30 minutes to get a satellite lock, but hey)  If Sprint would open up the api's totally for developers, we could "possibly" have some app that could use the gps off network, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Plus, this ain't an outdoorsy kind of phone, ya know? laugh

Even if the GPS is working where there is little or no coverage the phone won't help. The maps are downloaded as needed from the network, they are not in the phone.

I heard that some GPS can not receive the GPS signals if your mobile phone is out of service. Maybe your Garmin is like that. (But I never meet this kind of problems on my ZorroGPS.)

My garmin isn't the one with the problem. please re-read my initial post.

most of his/her posts advocate some "zorrogps". unless zorrogps can go around with a sword slashing the letter 'z' into things, i'm not interested.

..  "a little spammy."   That is what we called our fried Spam between Hi Ho crackers (with a drop or two of Tabasco);  little spammies.

Plus there was this kid in the 6th grade with a complexion problem, Little Spammy.

lol, etc..    laugh
