Corellon and I have exchanged a few notes about the phone's filesystem.  There is a folder named filebrowser that has all the icons you would need for a little file browser app (word, excel, jpg, folder, etc).  Nspeed on the buzzaboutwireless forum has found that if you go into the BREW menus (a very dangerous thing to do, by the way), you can actually run the file browser.  There are also options for landscape menus and other tricks.

http://forums.buzzaboutwireless.com/baw/board/message?board.id=Samsung_Instinct&message.id=15903#M15903

Now, the interesting thing to me is that the same filebrowser folder also contains about a dozen smilies that would be naturals for an IM app.  So, I asked Nspeed if he could look around some more for a hidden IM app.

Let the conspiracy theories begin!

I think think the file viewer is already on the instinct. Go to email and click on the icon of you mail service mine is (AIM) then it will have AIM Mail, Find Contacts, And Browse Files clicking on browse files lets you veiw all files on your phone

Yea beagle i saw ur post earlier, with the whole debug menu stuff.  makes u wonder, why wouldn't this be added already.  Guess sprint thought that people could configure the phone to find all their F*CK UPS and HIDDEN SH*T.  Well, now the theories will begin and if they do come to be true, than thats damn sad that pretty much all the stuff we want is right there, able to be added, with clear proof, yet sprint didn't add it from the beginning.

Too bad they didn't make this a separate application usable from the main menu.

This may not be the same as the fileviewer app that Nspeed found anyway.  The icons are different.  For example, using the mail attachment viewer (what you are mentioning), jpg files show an icon with a little mountain picture.  The jpg icon in the fileviewer directory shows a document with "JPG" over top of it.

It could be that fileviewer and the (possible) IM app simply were too buggy at the release date and so were "hidden".  As Nspeed pointed out, the fileviewer locked up when he went to the audio folder.

If the Instinct is anything like the M520 (as far as software goes) then the smiles are for TXTs.  My M520 has a bunch of smilies in the local FILESTORE, but no IM client.  I noticed when I got a TXT from my 13 yo cousin yesterday (who loves to txt l33t) that the smilies were taking the place of his Smiley Tongue Wink etc when I read the message.  I haven't gotten my Instinct yet (getting it today), but just a thought.

Telus User

Well I dont' get smiles in my text's, It's possible there are java apps hidden in the phone, from the limited information I've been able to get, the sprint file system is different from the telus filesystem (No suprise there) but in the fact that alot of the sprint apps are "somewhere" on the phone, where the telus apps are in the jad directory, which makes me wonder if we on telus might be lucky enought to still have the sprint apps on the phone, if only a matter of where to find them.

If Only I could do a side by side comparison of the file systems...

KillerBeagle has created a talk app. You might want to check it out and see if it meets your needs.
