If I convert them in the samsung software, it works but it takes forever to convert.  which isn't so bad I have found out, I set up 2-3 over night and let them run, done by morning.

but if I convert the files via a 3rd party software, I get the error:

Sorry, this channel is temporary unavailable.  Please try again later or contact customer support.
javax.microedition.media.MediaException: Content: unknown not supported with Protocol:file:

is it because the file is a MPEG-4 video file and not a MPEG-4 movie?  also, the MPEG-4 movie came from an avi while the "video file" came from divx/xvid format...

So I guess the real question is, is there a way to convert divx files to play on our phone without having to go through the tedious task of converting divx to avi to mpg4 (which might not even come out so good having converting so much)?

Almost all the movies I've converted have been from divx/xvid formats, I simply used Xilisoft video converter and followed the guidelines from other converting tutorials http://www.instinct-samsung.com/index.php/topic,541.0.html

I assume that free software would work just as well.  By the way, I'm not sure how much of a difference the video bitrate works, but I went down to like 512 for space reasons, it's still good.  I mean, why should I use 1200 on a 3.1 inch screen?

the main problem I'm apparently having is that whenever I convert a file via a 3rd party program, it doesn't work on the instinct, I get the same error of "channel not available", but if I load it via the program it loads just fine BUT it requires the file to be reformatted even if its already the correct format...

I'm just tired of the run around and was looking for a one step process to handle it.  maybe I am just using the wrong settings in the converters, what exactly should I set it at?

I'm not sure on why you're getting the error, I just plop the file into the program as it is, and when it's done it's instinct ready.  What software and settings are you using to convert?

I just purchases an a 8 gig card. Word to the wise, be careful with those micro SD cards..They are very sensitive and can become corrupted beyond use. You will think its your phone, but its the card. Don't use finger tips, knife, are object to remove card..It is spring loaded so if you press it, it will pop out.

Sprint media manager is the slowest converting app of its time. To convert  xvid/avi/mpeg use a 3rd party app to convert your file to mp4. Mp4 creates a very small file that looks better than 3g2 and for a small screen looks excellent.  Some 3rd party apps encoding engine in the software throws your movies/videos way out of sync!! I personally like WINXMEDIA IPOD MP4 CONVERTER. Best i used and i have tried them all.

The setting you want to use should be a little different than for an ipod, for best picture.  I would use 24 fps "frame rate", video bit rate 1200ps, audio bitrate 320kbps, audio sample rate 48hz and resolution 240 x 432 deinterlaced...Now according to your movies/videos you can adjust settings as needed. To encode an entire regular length movie takes about 30 minutes. Sprint media player no matter if you have dual core or etc...Will take you alittle over an hour.

Now, another reason i don't use Sprint Media Player to transfer movies is because no matter if i have the movie encoded already, it encodes it again!...So plug your INSTINCT in USB port and open the SD card folder in MY COMPUTER "icon" or if it pops up drag your encoded movies to the MEDIA folder. If you don't have a media folder, create one and put movies in there...The computer will copy all files you dragged to card. Now the bummer part...The USB is USB 1 so pretty slow,  but beats waiting hrs for your movie to be encoded in Sprint Media Manger.

Bonus*  Music can be done the  same way...Just drag all your music files and artwork with the m3u to the music folder on the micro SD card. You will have your playlist and looks just like you went through sprint media manager but faster.

Though I used a video bitrate of like 512 and an audio bitrate of 128.

it was my fault apparently, I had the wrong settings in videofora(?).  edited them and it works, now I can just drag and drop, the only problem is that it takes a good 2-3 hours to convert the divx movies (which are 700+MB each), but the plus is that they drop to about 400-500 MB for 1.5-2 hour videos.  I just set up 3 to run last night and when I woke up I just dropped them onto my 8 gig card in the instinct, took about 30 minutes to transfer over the slow USB 1.0 Sad.

ty for the tip.  the only reason I couldn't drop the files into the sprint/samsung converter is because they are divx/xvid formats and not many converters can handle those...
