My Today Screen

« Reply #17 on: July 29, 2008, 09:04:18 AM »

Did the search across the entire site...but didn't find what I was looking for...so mods pls be easy on me...

I'm tired of using the media manager to convert files to BEST fit the phone.  I have use Any Video Converter (free vers.)  I cannot adjust the resolution to full screen on the Instinct.  So...here are the questions:

1.  Can I utilize a higher resolution i.e. 480 x 320 and still the phone's media player will make it fit??  I know its a reach...

2.  I've read most of the posts about Videora, and other media converters...but have yet to find one that a user can set the resolution manually.  Do anyone know a media converter that would allow for that kind of customization??

thnx

This is the wrong place to ask video questions. Your better off searching the DOOM9 forum. Your not going to get good video info here.

I would consider myself a video guy. I've been converting videos for a number of different platforms for years now. And I have to say the video on the Instinct... SUCKS for a lack of a better word. They say it can play AVC H.264 video and it can, but only at 320x240 - Baseline Level 0 profile. It can play MPEG-4 ASP video like the PSP at 432x240 up to Advanced Simple Level 5, but I have yet to encode a high quality video that plays smooth. The Instinct doesnt play MP3 audio from a video file and AAC audio from Video files on Instinct causes choppy playback during panning scenes.

The best results you'll get will come from VirtualDUB Mod. Most people here use cheap tools. VirtualDUB is what all of the video and illegal movies you download online are made with. It's the best tool out there but it will take some time to learn all of the different settings and aspects of video encoding. You'll have to encode to an AVI without audio and use a mux tool like MP4Box to combine them into an MP4 container.

If you dont want to learn VirtualDUB, use MediaCoder. It's not as good as VirtualDUB, but it's the best all in one tool and it does let you set MOST of what you need to.

What Sprint needs to do is unlock the video of the device. From my testing the device can play back high quality video at high bitrates, but the lack of scaling, lack of audio playback from video files and lack of full screen H.264 video really kills it. I hope in this update (whenever they decide to release it) opens up the video player a little more. At the very least scaling options should be added.

And if people reading this THINK that any of the tools I've seen mentioned come close to the quality you  can get from VirtualDUB... your sadly mistaken.

BTW - You can set resolution with the tools you mentioned, you just have to go into the advanced options or add a simple command line to the encoder output.

Thanks for the info...actually its very helpful...

I have figured out that the video and audio gets seperated for the Instinct.  I converted one of my .avi files directly thru the media manager...my video decoder comes active...NOT audio...resulting in a audioless movie on the phone.  I have taken to running my files thru Any Video Converter which puts both audio and video into one container, then allow the media manager to do its thing.

Thru some experimentation, I am now able to convert my files once using Any DVD Converter...

using the customizable MP4 setting...(video codec set at mpeg4 and the resolution is set higher than the known 432x240.  I have my videos set at 480x272.  The videos plays perfectly, and looks pretty good.

I would love for someone to crack the media player OR come up with a BETTER media player for the Instinct...

Separate question can the Instinct's hardware allow for better video playback graphically speaking??  Meaning, is Sprint or Samsung holding back the phone with crappy programing and not FULLY utilizing the phone's hardware potential?

Select Iphone, not Ipod; I think the audio/video formatting is dependent on this setting.  Make sure you select Mped-4 file format also.

I downloaded the Videoar iPod converter program and tried with two different YouTube videos but both times I got an error message "forbidden."  Has anyone been successful in downloading and converting a YouTube video?

Yes. download the latest realplayer! http://www.real.com/
after you download and install that.. all you have to do is right-click the video>choose download to realplayer. the movie will download as a .swf then use videora to convert it. ITs that simple. Ive got Batman: The Dark Knight on my instinct thanks to this AWESOME program..

Hope this helps

If you do not want to download real player to get youtube videos and you have firefox, you can try this
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6460
"Better youtube"

It adds several things to YT including a download link.

i dont think there is a way to actually dial in a screen resolution.. it just automatically thinks you have an ipod screen.. But keep checking videora for updates as im sure they'll have a new converter just for our phones..
I use the xbox 360 converter.. and it is AWESOME quality on the instinct because its made for a bigger screen but downsizes it automatically..

Videora only allows for the presets to be used.  If you want customizable options, you can try converting the files with handbrake.  This utility allows you to customize all kinds of settings, including the resolution, frame rates, etc...  I use it to convert DVDs to mp4.  It should also work on individual video files as well.  Just use the classic preset and then enter in the custom resolution.  Works every time for me.  Videora is a good tool if you don't mind the resolution being a little off.  You can download handbake here:
