ive narrowed down the best settings for encoding movies with optimal screen resolution size, i use 400x220, its the smallest vid size and fills the screen completely, NO BLACK BARS ANYWHERE.  just resize the video useing 400 width 220 height, mp4, mpeg-4, bit rate 384 kbps<--- lowering this setting will make file smaller, but quality will also suffer, of course raising it will increase quality and size.  i use total video convertor, it easily resizes  ANY vid and doesnt require you to fumble with fps and whatnot, also keeps audio in perfect sync.  i just did a 2hr 5 min movie with those settings 406 mb size, 1 hr 25 min movie 295 mb.

Hello everyone, please i just have a very quick question...i used media converter to convert my videos to mp4, and they all play fine on my instinct...now the tricky part that kinda intrigues me is that i can't seem to get the videos to be full screen..they are almost full, except for the black areas on the side of the screen. the resolutions talked about above, by shane3029 cannot be configured on media converter, because the program does not have those resolutions..but rather gives you a couple to choose from....so please, i would really appreciate it if someone tells me a couple of resolutions (2 or 3) that would surely make the videos full screen...i say surely because my computer takes a lot of time to convert & download these files, so i would love to get it right the first time, so i don't spend the whole day messing around with resolutions until i get it right.

thanks everyone!

increasing the bitrate will give you better quality, but also increase size of file... i used 384 cause it was just a ballpark figure i threw out there, quality is pretty good, not dvd, but very viewable

Out of all that ive tried i think 432x240 is by the far the best fullscreen setting.

I have been using one of the more complex converters but today stumbled on a really simple and very fast converter: Format Factory. I converted to mp4 368 X 208 and the quality of the video on the phone was excellent. It is the fastest and simplest converter I've found and free besides.

Our screen is in the ratio of 16 X 9. If your original video is in that format almost any pixel ratio that equals 16 X 9 results in full screen on the phone.

All else being equal higher pixel count gives better resolution. But the software that does the conversion can also affect the resulting resolution, its not just the pixel count.

368 X 208 resulted in a very good video and a file size 54% of my original.

I also tried 480 X 272. I could tell the difference running full screen on a my large computer monitor and maybe a slight difference on the phone;the file size was only reduced to 88% of the original. With an 8G card the size may not be important.

Well if I understand it our screen is 432x240 so obviously you need to get close to that for the "full size" everyone is talking about.
But I'm willing to have some "blackspace" if the quality and ratio stay correct.
Thanks for the tips, I'll try to add some worthy feedback once I get something working.

Tried Format Factory.. I took a video, pretty much DVD quality. 716k .avi file.
Coverted it using:
Mobile Device Compatible 320x240 mpeg4
320x240, 24 fps, 384 KB/s bitrate, mpeg4(DivX), 16:9, 48k sampe rate, 128 bitrate

It produced a 389k .mp4 file, that looks pretty good on my phone.  in "landscape mode" it is full height, but obviously at 320pixel wide, it leaves some black on the sides.  Looks good though.

I believe that's about a 54% decrease in file size, same as Jalann mentioned.

OH, and more importantly the sound seemed to have remained sync'd.  I tried another converter on the same file.  It not only did NOT reduce the size, it also messed up the sound.

Format Factory took a LONG time on this machine, but I was also streaming video and working on various programs whiel it was working.  I'll definately keep it to use while testing other converters, but so far it's working best out of the few I've tried.
