I doubt you can only fit 228 1 MB songs.  Hence, smaller = more...

Out of curiosity...How many songs do you have on the instinct [you do have an instinct right?]
Also are your songs 1mb each?
How did you transfer them to the Instinct [WMP, SMM, drag/drop onto sd?]
WHat file format are you using?

1) ~1500
b) no, 1Mb is just a really small number to illustrate my point
3) instinct as mass storage device, drag in music folder on Instinct
4) .mp3, low frequency, ~4.5 Mb for average length song

There is no point using any other format.  Audio is better quality for PC and commercial speakers using the other formats, but you won't be able to tell much of a difference on the phone's media player...

OK so after converting and reconverting [a big pain in the @$$] I finally got the Instinct to recognize everything. The M4a were small but guess that file extension is a bit buggy.  Next I converted it to WMA and still no luck (total file size was 456 MB for 242 songs)  Then I reconverted the M4a into MP3 using a free program from [http://www.maniactools.com/soft/m4a-to-mp3-converter/convert-m4a-to-mp3.shtml] The bit rate --> 80 , Mode --> Stero, & Freq -->3200. Finally all the songs were recognized and played well  Shocked

Odd, I've never seen or heard of this problem yet...

Day I got the phone I dropped 500 songs on a 4GB card and threw it in, no issues... but I stray away from things like "Media manager's" in general, I just dropped them in the music folder on the card

I had the same exact problem on my instinct for a while and figured something must be wrong because i only had 50 songs at the time..
the music player won't accept wma format and sometimes m4a...it depends on how its coded...just stick with mp3's and you shouldn't have any problems
another thing that makes the music player go crazy is certain symbols or letters with accents in the file name

hope this helps anyone else having problems

Wild guessing here since I don't have an Instinct, yet.. Quite possibly this maximum is based on how much "header" data is stored inside the Instinct when it creates a database of your files. You may be giving it too much information. Plenty of errors like this come from either (I'll make it a list)

  • Having lots of really long filenames (particularly if they are also stored inside really long folder names).
  • Including overly comprehensive ID tags especially if ID1, ID2, and ID3 tags are all present in the files.
  • Putting too many files or too many folders in the root folder.
  • You've got incompatible unicode characters in some of the ID tags or file names (As in do you like J-pop?).
  • One of your files can't be read properly by the player and is corrupting the whole lot; preventing the player from further indexing.

All of these things at one point have maxed out or corrupted the various buffering systems and caches of MP3 players I've owned in the past. Removing extra catalog information and shortening filenames allowed the player to index more files. The conversions some people are finding success with may be succeeding because the converter is stripping certain headers from the files, renaming, or removing invalid data in the process.

Hope that helps somebody!

I have a question. If you bought songs from iTunes, and want to put them on your Instinct, how would you un protect them so it can play them?

eheheh,  sorry I just found it amusing that people still pay for downloaded music.

I must be behind the times here,   Itunes puts protection on their mp3's?    is that true?   I wasn't aware that mp3's could even be protected.

Yeah, it's DRM protection so only iPods and iTunes can play their songs. I only bought those because it was a big album and Limewire  couldn't find all of the songs. =]
