Hi!

After 3 days of trying to figure out how to get music on this wonderful device, I have finally found a efficient way to do so. So here it is!

Step 1:

-Downloading The Software-

Go to www.MediaMonkey.com and click on download, then follow the links till it starts. This has to be one of the best freewares out there. It makes converting music and embedding album art a breeze, so I highly recommend getting this for putting music on your Instinct.

Step 2:

-Finding Your Music-

Get all of the music that you want to put on your Instinct and copy it into a folder purely for your instinct. This way you have back ups if you every need them. I suggest making sub folders for Artists and albums but you can do them all at once into one folder as well.
example:
Desktop\Instinct Music\Opeth\Stilllife

Step 3:

-Converting Your Music-

Open Media Monkey, (I recommend doing the albums individually but you can do all at once) copy the music you want and paste into the now playing window.

Select all of the files and click on Tools then "Convert Audio Format" (or Shift+Control+C).
A window will pop up with the destination for the new files, copy the folder (continuing the example: Desktop\Instinct Music\Opeth\Stilllife) and paste it into the text window.

Next you need to change the format so click on the scroll tab that says "format" next to it and click on MP3.

If you want, you can click on settings bellow "format" to change the bit rate or quality of the song.

Click on "Okay" located at the bottom right of the window to start the conversion and let it take it's sweet time to finish.

Step 3:

-Embedding Album Art-

After your music is converted, you can add album art to make a much better presentation on your Instinct. To do so, you are first going to need to download a file of the album art. I personally used google and did a image search for "Opeth Stilllife"(Opeth being the band, and stilllife being the album". find a image that is bigger then 240x240 px and download it. I recommend saving it with the album for safe keeping.

Once you have the album art, you need to get a image conversion program. Programs like Photoshop (not freeware) or Gimp (freeware) work great.

You can get Gimp (freeware) at http://www.gimp.org/

I personally use photo shop so I am going to explain what to do with that but I am sure that Gimp is very similar in process.

Open Photoshop, and click on file, then open. find the album art that you had downloaded (example: Desktop\Instinct Music\Opeth\Stilllife\Stilllife Album Art) and click on open.

Once you have the image opened in photoshop, click on "Image", then "Image Size". a window will pop up for this. click on the scroll tab and click on pixels. After this change the width to 240px, hit "OK", then "File" , "Save As" and save into the same place that the original picture was from under the same name. It will ask you if you want to overwrite the original file, hit "OK".

Now that you have the Album Art in the right resolution, open Media Monkey again and put the music that you have already converted into the "Now Playing" tab. select the album that you want to embed the album art to, right click it, and hit "Properties". A window will pop up. Click on the "Album Art" tab and hit "Add". Next you find the image that you converted and hit "Open", then "OK".

Now you have your music embedded with album art! yay!

Step 4:

-Getting The Music Onto The Instinct-

There are several ways to do this. One is through the software that came with the phone, the second is through Media Monkey, and the Third (which I use and will explain) is manually. I recommend doing this manually just because I know there are people out there that cant get there phones to connect to the Media Manager, and this works no matter what.

Connect your phone to your computer, or connect the SD card into a SD slot in your computer, and open the Removable Disk. Click on Music, then copy the files that you converted and paste them into this folder. This will take some time, so do get too gitty while waiting!

Once all the files are copied onto the memory stick, their put the memory stick into your phone, or unplug the usb cord depending on which method you used.

Now that your music is on your phone, open the music program, and enjoy!!!

================================================================================

I hope that this helped some of you! I had so much trouble with this, it took me hours to get it just right, so I thought that I would share this information with fellow Instinct owners. If you have any questions or additions please feel free to post them in this thread, or email them to me.

Thanks again!

Do option 3, its the easiest.  Sprint Media Manager, is a work of the devil. It's evil I tell ya evil. Why sprint would create a software that screws up its own product is beyond me. But I guess thats what you get when you hire programmers at 11.50 an hour.  You get what you paid for.

That's a great how-to and I appreciate you posting it however for a $600 phone, in my opinion it should just work without all the extra effort.

I will try your guide though, thanks!

I just ripped the music to Windows Media Player, plugged in my phone and used the Synch feature.  Worked like a charm

Gimp is VERY simple to do.  I would recommend modifying the image before you use MediaMonkey.

1. Run Gimp
2. File/Open and select your image.
3. When the window with the image opens select Image/Scale image
4. Set width to 240 then click "Scale Image"
5. File/Save

Thats it..all done. Now follow the instructions on using MediaMonkey.
