I've noticed the random lettering under the web icons myself.
It should  correct itself...maybe check if it's running in the backround and exit the application if it is.
To check if it's running just tap the top part of your screen then select app manager in the drop down screen.  Your looking for WebServicesApp...click the arrow to the right, and select exit application.

You can also update your data profile by going to:
main/settings/general/update data profile.

Not sure why it happens, but your not alone.
I just keep my web menu in a listing view instead of the icon view myself

Resetting is no fun, sorry to hear that's the route you took.
I wanted to let you know the apps in the fun menu also create an error if you try to open 2 at a time...like facebook, then twitter...if you don't log out of one, you'll still get the error.  This happened after the last update to the phone.

To make sure to avoid this, either log out of the app you had open, or tap the top of your screen and select app manager in the drop down screen and look for " AnthemDash ".  Then exit the application.
AntemDash is Myspace, Twitter, and Facebook all rolled in to one application...and opening two at once causes errors.
