So I was sitting here thinking OMG this is the coolest phone ever, a few little let downs, like not being able to make the ring tone for texting contact specific. But whatever.

So this phone has a GREAT little camera on it, how cool would it be to be able to take a video with your phone and stream it live to another contact, that has the capability to accept it. Now I know that we can take video, save it to the phone then send it, but I want to have almost real time video chat type a thing. Can it be done with this phone?

This is a service called Vision, aka Video Calling. Not only does it cost money but the phone has to support it. This one does not.

Now I'm no developer but I'm doubtful that this is possible.

interesting enough i had the same thought when the phone first came out.  i actually thought maybe we could use it as a web cam.  wishful thinking on my part.... BUT  Sprint hinted at the same idea last in Episode 17 of 24... great product placement.  But maybe foreshadowing too.  Any thoughts?

Video calling will never happen with this phone.  Streaming a video, I would say probably not.(probably)

haha yah in 24 the other night Starkwood's CEO was actually in "picture mode" when talking to ...<spoiler>.

On the other note, it is improbable, but not impossible.  Not sure if the phone can compress the video quick enough (i think it would have to be done in hardware as the processor isn't fast enough to do it in software which our phone doesn't have) to stream to another person.  Maybe with an awful sampling rate...and i mean absolutely awful.

Bottom line: To do video chat you have to be constantly decoding and encoding into a compressed format and i just doubt the phone can do it.

Ya I saw this as well, Jonas Hodges was showing was showing the President the Nuclear missiles he planned to use, but Tony Almeida saved the day in the latest episode. Sorry about any spoilers lol. Did you also notice tony almeida was also doing this suppposed "video calling"?

A little off topic but did you see the latest episode? so much stuff happened, and I'm very mad that Tony went back to the dark side. And  lastly I was glad ro see Elisha Cuthbert is back with her beautiful body!

Yep it's basically video calling which sprint doesn't have. Now if you're talking about doing it over a messenger like you would with a webcam on your computer, who knows? I believe with the API update the camera will be accessible by third party apps so...be hopeful. I wouldn't cross my fingers though.

I think that is a great idea however I do not foresee this happening for this phone.
Maybe in the next set of phones...1-3 years from now. I can see video chatting being the next big thing to take us all on...even trumping the texting generation, they will be flash ready, super quick, multi touch, and be able to do things we can not even think of yet. In other words the next generation of phones will be a mini version of your home computer. I just don't think ANY phone today can stream live video crisp and quickly enough. It will get here tho, quicker than we know.
On a side note the instincts camera is on the opposite side of the screen which would make video chatting really stupid as you would be flipping the phone around every 2 seconds.

"livecast.com"

but I don't think it would be available for this phone...worth a shot though, I have it on my Windows Mobile Phone.

Go to Japan. They already have that. When the Iphone came out they laughed and called it primitive.

Why go to Japan, I could go to Roger's Wireless, they have video calling. They have had it for at least 2 years.

What I was really impressed with is how this streaming video from Tony's phone was sending from four stories underground in a shielded bunker. I get one bar at ground level.

this phone is awesome and all but look at it... its not physically possible to undergo a video call... you'd have to flip the phone back and forth to have a see and let see conversation.... the cam is on the opposite side of the screen so even if an app was created, it'd be physically difficult to carry on a video conversations... Cool
