I think that the GPS navigation feature would be greatly improved it if incorporated information about local golf courses much like sky caddy!  I would love to use my phone to find how far it is to the pin!

the GPS application is done by TeleNAV, an outside company... Sprint just rebrands it, give them the suggestion and you might get somewhere.

Yes, judging by a quick look thru the developer APIs.  Pretty much everything is open and available...  I have NOT yet spent much time looking at the details, but I was able to java myself some code and send it down to the phone and it worked flawlessly... sweet!

Given that, there are some sweet APIs available from the web that could be incorporated into the Instinct as 3rd party applications.  Take for example the Youtube client on the iPod/iPhone.  Google owns the API for this type of interface, and it's pretty well build.  http://code.google.com (look for the youtube API).

Someone needs to build a client for the Instinct using the YouTube API.

There are several golf caddie apps available for gps capable phones.  IntelliGolf has versions for most platforms, but is subscription based.  Golftrax is another caddie app, but I'm not sure if they offer Java version.  The one that looks most promising is one called FreeCaddie.  It is free and they just released a Java version.  Unfortunantly you will not get beyond the install because the midlet is not signed by Sprint.  I tried contacting the support about the problem, but I have not received any feedback.  I think if there are enough Instinct users showing interest, they might take notice.  I see there is a post in their forum confirming a future iPhone version.  What gives?

That is a great idea.  I would love to have my phone act as a sky caddy.

OK, so I've been trying to figure out how to send my code to the phone.  Can you share how this is done?  (without using deviceAnywhere i hope)

thanks in advance

WELL WELL I found it before anyone answered this ... http://ra.pcslab.com/upload/upload.php  even has a help button so you can figure out how to download program files.  works great.

Just curious about something... not being familiar with the Sky Caddy app, I can't say what all features my little suggestion might lack. To find the nearest golf courses, couldn't you just use the Live Search button, tell the phone "golf course" and there's your list?

Sky Caddy is an app to use on the golf course itself.  Using GPS it gives distances to the flag, bunkers, water etc.  Since its GPS it will give you this info from anywhere on the hole, from tee to green.

Anyone been able to find anything?  Not so much for GPS for but score/stat tracking?  I emailed intelligolf and it doesn't appear that the instinct is supported yet.
