Hi everyone.  I'm working on a strategy card game.  I've got enough done for a playable demo.. but if you download keep in mind i'm still not done.  The screenshot here is a general idea from the emulator.. i think it looks better once on the phone.

BIG THANKS TO:
sweet greggo - Design / Graphics

--- Download the .jar file attached and upload it to your phone using Rumkin or some other site.

If you are willing to download and play, please provide any feedback you want.  If there are suggestions or ideas I'd like to know so I can work on those pieces more.  Also, if you notice any obvious bugs (something doesn't look right / text clipping, something didn't happen like it should have, etc) please let me know in PM or on here.

Basic Instructions:
1. Turned based game: Update phase (automatic.. untap, execute spell effects, etc) -> Draw phase (automatic) -> play phase (cast any # of spells; play 1 creature unless modified by spell; attack by selecting your creature and opponents creature) -> Done -> discard (if you have 5 cards in hand) -> opponents turn -> loop
2. Object of game: reduce opponents health to 0 (it's the white # in the top right corner)
3. select card from hand and click Play/Cast button to use; if button doesn't say Play/Cast then it cannot be used
3a. creature cards come out phased, where they cannot be used to attack with until they are done being summoned.
3b. spell cards -> some need a target, it will tell you what to click in order to Cast
4. when you are done with your turn click Done.
5. opponents turn goes by almost instantly, so once you can click on things again it should be your turn.

The big todo's still outstanding:
1. menu (right now it will just loop to a new game when its over) / instructions / stats / etc
2. add more graphics; spruce up attack phase
3. make opponent smarter
4. options
5. some actions shouldn't be allowed on cards that are turned

Seriously, I think it looks good. I haven't ever played but took a quick look at the link.  I am assuming you are doing that AWT? The devil is in the details though. Adding shadows, gradients, highlights to give it a more 3d look will make it pop.  People like configurable, like being able to set the bg color but it's debatable if that actually value-added.  For inspiration take a look at some of the games put out by the pro teams.  Personally I wouldn't worry about any of that until I had a fully working prototype.

Thanks for the input.  I've got a lot of the basics completed, need to work on turn taking and settings still.  No graphics really in it yet because I suck at drawing so I'm putting that off until the end.

I'm just using lcdui right now.

I played that damn game all day yesterday... pretty addicting.

I agree with Twelve, the graphics definitely need polishing. I wouldn't let that hold back development though. You can always upgrade the graphics in an "update."

Initial thoughts:

1) Looks and plays really well! I like it so far.

2) I played a few games last night. During one of the games, it seemed to get caught in some sort of loop that it couldn't get out of. Basically, I could still select different cards, but when I would hit the "Done" button, it wouldn't advance to the next turn. I had to restart.

3) I think it needs some sort of summary of the computer's turn. Nothing like seeing 2 or 3 of your cards disappear and your left with a "whaaaa..." look on your face. If you don't have room on the screen maybe you can assign a hardware button to pull up an in game menu.

4) Does it show how many turns it takes for a card to become active after casting? I looked but couldn't find it. It definitely needs this.

5) You probably aren't finished with the graphics, but I'll throw in my 2 cents anyway. Obviously you'll want more "pop" in the icons... add highlights and shadows, maybe a textured background, etc. Also perhaps different colors for the different types of cards... green for ogre, blue for knight... etc. I don't think you'd be able to put images on the cards, so changing colors would be a good alternative.

Overall it's a strong start. I look forward to seeing the next release.

I'd only been testing in the emulator and never got stuck in the loop... but after i uploaded and posted it here i started playing a few games on my phone and i got stuck in that exact same loop-situation!

For turns left, when the card is brown it is still being summoned... on the top of the card it says "# Tu.." - another fault of testing in the emulator.  It is supposed to say "# Turns" meaning how many turns are left.

I agree with not knowing what is going on during the computer's turn is crazy.  For now I made the computer pretty dumb in that it only plays creatures, no spells, and it will attack just going down the line.

There are a few minor tweaks i need to make first like the ones you mentioned above, then i plan to start work on graphics this weekend.

I was kinda wondering why it was so easy to beat. Wink

For turns left, I think the way I worded that was a little confusing. I was referring to BEFORE the card is cast. Kinda helps planning what to play when you know how many turns it takes for a card to become active. It looks like you have plenty of room next to the name for this, i.e.: Ogre (3 turns)

I'll post more issues if I find any.
