On the www.dslreports.com/mspeed  site, I picked 100k and then was told to pick a larger file (1m) and got
349 kbit/sec .0368s latency and 23.797s d/l
Then choose "Fastest today" so you can see what other ISPs are measuring today.  You will probably see that spcsdns.net is over over the place with its speed.

This site compares your speed to Dial-up, DSLs, and cable modems:
www.mobilespeedtest.com
 I got  399.50kbps.

And last and maybe "least" is www.sprint.com/speedtest
which I thought should work, but it doesn't.  Oh, well....

That's made for people who use sprint's broadband cards in their laptops.

That I understand, but it would be nice if Sprint would make a test site for all of us with mobile phones, like the Instinct, that are now curious about the speed.

On mobilespeedtest.com I got between 399kbs and 412kbs

On dslreport I got 592kbps

My guess is the large discrepancy comes from the sites used, not the network.

I think a big problem with the speed testers on the builtin browser is that it also takes page build calculation times into account.. those browser image based tests are very inaccurate.

Example... if you notice your load indicator and the bars/arrows in the top right of your browser window... the page will still show a loading status when there is no data transmitting. This is time it is taking for the crappy browser to actually build the page.

On the mobile test I never get more than 500k/sec...

However when I test the phone tethered to my laptop via USB (bluetooth is limited to 1mbps) I get well over 1000 kbps. I've broken the 1900 kbps on the PC. I usually get 900kbps with only 1 or two bars.
