First, thanks to Joan S from eCare at Sprint and her coworker for figuring this out and solving a nightmarish issue re: Cable ISP email on the instinct  Cheesy
Once I get her supervisors email, I'll post it here and I would encourage everyone who's been suffering from this issue to drop him/her a note and tell them how great Joan and her coworkers are for solving this vexing issue.

If you have cable internet and are struggling with the Desktop Connector's many, shall we say, "issues" but really want to keep using your ISP email, or if you're just starting out with this phone and want to setup your ISP email to work the way that God intended, here's how:

Again, with many thanks to Joan S at sprint. Give her and her coworker who figured this out a bonus Sprint, they've likely saved you many a returned phone and frustrated customer.

1st: Delete whatever pesky "work" email (that is to say email requiring the desktop connect program) from your instinct.
2nd: Go to www[.]icmail[.]net
3rd: Sign up for a new account using the SAME email name as your ISP and the SAME password as your ISP.
That is to say if your ISP email is "Someone @ somewhere.com" and your password is "Something", your icmail.net user name and password should be "someone @ icmail.net" and the password should be "something".
4th: It will then ask you for your EXISTING email (your Cable ISP email) Enter that and messages sent from your sprint Instinct will appear as though they came from your cable ISP. Enter in your Instinct phone number. (no, they don't call you on it.)

Now you're done with the setting up of the "icmail" proxy.
Onto the Instinct settings.

5th: On your instinct, click "Add New Email Account",
6th: Scroll down to and click "more".
7th: Select and click "Other POP".
8th: Enter your cable ISP email and password (with the [@domain.com/net/whatever] attached)
9th: Enter your incoming mail server (whatever you enter for your home PC for incoming mail. Usually something to the effect of mail.somecompany.com or pop.somecompany.com) Keep SSL off unless your ISP normally requires it. The account name should be the same as the user name of your cable ISP with the domain info.
10th: In the outgoing mail, put in the following "mail.icmail.net" and leave everything else alone!
11th: Enter a mailbox name as you want it to appear on the email page of the Instinct. "Office" "Home" whatever.
12th: Click "Next", it will bring you to the sign-in screen.
13th: Click "Next" again to finalize the settings and start getting mail.
14th: Enjoy your cable ISP email to its fullest with no issues!!!!!

15th: Note: The icamil.net will only allow you to sign up for one account per IP address. So pick the one you want/need most unless you have access to multiple IP's or can mask it really well.

I've been testing this for over 2 hours now, with zero problems.
No more worrying about your home internet connection failing, if your kids closed the desktop connector program, if you lost power, if your computer is shut down, if the Desktop Connector took a dump.
No worrying about calling the wife and asking her to check the computer to ensure the settings are correct or if SEVEN's network got overloaded.

And most of all, no more S7123 errors!

WHOOO HOOO!   Grin Cheesy

Thank you Joan, you're a goddess!

Here is a copy of the email I just got back from Joan. If the above works for you, please let her supervisor know. I know from reading here that many have had the same issues with the email functions on this phone.

Dear XXXXXXXX,

Thank you for contacting Sprint. My co-worker and I have been waiting to
hear from you.

We are as excited as you are. He just asked me 10 minutes ago if I had
heard back from you. You have no idea how good it feels to get an email
like this. You have made my day also.

You can email my supervisor at [PM me for his email]@sprint.com. I sent him a
copy of your email.

Thank you again for contacting Sprint.  We appreciate your business.

Just a few things:

Even though you are using icmail.net's account you are still going through SEVEN's servers/network. I don't believe this works for everyone, but it did work for your specific configuration. You are eliminating the need for a desktop connector because icmail has OWA access. If your Exchange/Domino server supports OWA then you can skip icmail and a desktop connector all together. You are just replacing one point of failure with another. While it is possible that icmail would be more reliable that your stand alone desktop connector, if your exchange/domino has OWA enabled in the first place you dont need either. All you do is setup a OWA work account with your work email credentials.

OWA is enabled by default on all exchange installations so there is a high chance that you dont need a desktop connector.

Also, depending on what your ISP is you might of been using the incorrect client. I believe for comcast and road runner ISP's you need a different client that supports sending through Road Runners SMTP server. You should ask's sprints customer support about this if you are having issues sending through your SMTP server.

I do believe that setting your account up like this did resolve your issues, but I believe it had something to do with your desktop connector. Possibly a firewall or software program blocking your access from the server, etc. Find out if your company supports OWA.

Also, I highly recommend that you do not post a supervisor's email address on a public forum.

But I am glad to hear that you got everything back up and running.

Re-read the orig post.
This isn't about work email setups.
This is about using the work desktop client as a workaround for the issues with the "Other POP" cable ISP email problems.

This is a problem that most every cable ISP user has in their email.
Cable ISP's (Comcast, Insightbb, RoadRunner, COX, etc etc) almost always block off-network email access to prevent spammers. This has the negative effect of blocking mobile devices as well. Simply put, unless you're on their cable hardline or going through their webmail aplet, no email. Cable ISP's don't mess around OWA.

The desktop connector was being used a (buggy) workaround for the "Other POP" issue, where you could get mail, but could not reply unless you setup the sending of emails through another account (like sprints pcs or gmail, or someone else).
The downfall of that was that when replying, your email addy would be seen as the company you're replying through, not your cable ISP.
Since some have spam blocks or filters, this was a cause for concern, since you'd never know the message was blocked, because the reply stating it was being blocked would go to whatever inbox of the account you sent the email through, not to your cable ISP email. Savy?

The icmail proxy eliminates this issue, and I'm not sure it's going through SEVEN's email system. I may be wrong, but anyway, I'm not so sure it was SEVEN's system so much as the destop connect client that was the issue. Anyway, it's no longer an issue. As it also eliminates the need for your home computer to be on, for your home computer to have internet access, for nothing else sucking down your bandwidth (like kids playing online games at home) etc. etc. that were inherant in the desktop connect workaround.

Also, it's (the desktop client) been tried without a firewall running, without a router running, with the router in DMZ mode, with everything that could be affecting it's ability to connect turned off. Yet anyone who used it will tell you it was unreliable and a pain in the butt.
The desktop connestor workaround was one failure point after another. This is more like the blackberry system for getting and sending email. Fewer faliure points, more reliable system, and doesn't require anything on your home computer to be running or even for your home computer to be on. Always nice to know when traveling.

if you have a cable ISP, I encourage you to try this for your cable email. I think you'll find it much better than the desktop connect workaround.

I know for a fact that it still goes through SEVEN's network. As long as you are using the application it will go through their network regardless of configuration.

You are correct about cable ISP's being really strict about access. It requires a specific client as I stated in the last post. I'm unsure why Sprints Customer support was not aware of this, as it has been this way for a long time with the application. They need to supply you with the correct client to use the cable isp's servers. If you just try to set it up on the default client located on the phone it will not work. I'll see if I can dig up the direct link to the client, but customer support should have this on hand. Then you could avoid the work around's, desktop connectors, and/or multiple point of failures.

I'll see if I can find the link for you.

What does the Reply address look like coming through? Is it your ISP addy or an icmail addy -- have you actually tested it? If it's not your ISP addy then I might've read the post too fast but this doesn't seem much different than the idea of using Gmail to pull and reply to your ISP messages.

The "From:" and "Reply-To:" address using this setup is the same (if you set it up properly using the above) as your home ISP.

Meaning it looks as though it came from your cable ISP.
I'm not 100% on the inner workings of this setup, all I know is that when I send an email to a friend who has a spam-block on unknown, unapproved emails, it goes through just fine.

[EDIT]
Also, you get your email directly from your ISP to your phone.
No need for forwarding incoming mail like with Gmail.
This leaves a copy (if you set it up that way on your ISP anyway) of the incoming email on the server so you can look at it later on your PC. Comes in handy since there's no .PDF viewer yet. But if you already have the msg on your phone, your ISP won't try to send it to you again. I don't know if Gmail or other wrokarounds would do that or not, but figured I'd mention it just in case.

I am having problems getting this to work. On the www.icmail.net site, it asks me
for:  Password Retrieval Question and Password Answer....I don't know what to put here and
it appears to be no place to enter my actual password. Once I enter something in these fields.
it says that a e-mail will be sent to my cox.net account, but it is never there?? HELP!!
