The policy hack sets these permissions (in these index files) for applications when they're installed. Each application has its own index file.

The advantages of modifying the index files is that you can have different permissions for different applications and you can force gps, filesystem, media permissions if you need. The disadvantage is that you have to modify the file for each application that you install.

Fortunately, the policy hack doesn't conflict with modifying the index files. Personally, I prefer using the policy hack for network access and adjusting other permissions for applications as needed.

Step 1:
Go to /brew/mod/obigo/jas/index in bitpim and find the right index file (I prefer to backup the entire directory so I can do a search on Windows)

Step 2:
Find the line that looks something like this:
PERM: 0=1,1=1,2=1,3=0,4=1,5=1,6=0,7=1,8=1,9=1,10=0,11=0,12=0
and change it to have #=2 for the permissions you want (see list below). Like with the policy file, don't add spaces or change the formatting in any way.

Step 3:
Copy the modified index file back to the phone. Turn the phone off and on.

Here's the full list of index file permissions:

   0: Network access
   1: Message receive
   2: Message Deliver
   3: Filesystem Read
   4: Filesystem Write
   5: Application Self Start
   6: Comm
   7: Bluetooth
   8: Multimedia
   9: Location
   10: GPS
   11: Device Info
   12: Security

The different Values are:

   0: No access
   1: Ask for access
   2: Grant access without asking

even after policy hack my gps wouldnt work.

opened up the application permissions, found mobile gmaps, and it was set to deny. changed it to a 2, GPS WORKS! =D

this has fixed two things for me now, very happy.

the gps found my city, but its so far off right now, i have zero bars here, so if it isnt TRUE gps that would explain why its so off.

edit:

it did lock onto my correct location after a while.

All I have in /brew/mod/obigo/jas/index is folders.txt folders_bup.txt and 25 supposedly txt files called 1.txt through 25.txt even though they are not standard text files... any help?

the #.txt is the permission file for your application.

you can open them up in notepad or wordpad just fine, and read everything.

25 of them is a huge amount though...how many apps do you installed on your phone oO

They are standard text files. Everything that you install on the phone is assigned a number (ringtones, games, some images). The numbers here correspond with the jad/jar number assigned to the application.

Like I said, right-click on the index folder and backup the entire thing. Then you can do a search on Windows to find the file containing the title of the application you're looking for. Modify that file as needed, then overwrite the one on the phone.

Great info! Can anyone confirm GPS works???

Would there be any problems if we grant access to everything to all apps?

Granting all permissions to everything is what the policy hack tries to do. This method is an alternative to that which can give you greater insight/control over what permissions individual applications have. I think it would only be a problem to grant full access if the program was malicious.

I haven't found an application on which GPS works well, but it does find me on Amaze and Mobile GMaps.

Yup, I know. You stated that your GPS worked. I am asking for confirmation from other people...

scan through the gmaps forum, there are a bunch of people that got there gps working only using the policy hack, i had to do this even after the policy hack, i think its something to do with the carrier your phone is from.

I only change the permissions I want; gps/location for gps apps, filesystem read/write for opera/BT/media players, network for most everything. I see no reason why you couldn't set all permissions to "always allow", but I don't do it.

if your app dosnt need locations, or gps, dont enable it, or your phone might just start giving the gps power so that the app can use it, even though the app dosnt need it.

so changing "10=2" for opera mini, is just pointless and going to run your battery down quicker.
