Any 1 converted .vob files into .mp4? I am currently using the full version of WinXmedia to convert my movies into mp4 files. It is working but the files are to big once shrunk down (out of a 4 gig movie it shrunk down to 800megs).
So i am asking if any one has done this and knows what thing i could turn down to make the file smaller?

Frame Rate: 24
Video Bitrate: 1150kbps
Volumes: unlimited
Audio Bitrate: 256kps
Audio Sample Rate: 44khz
Audio: Stereo
Resolution: 432 x 240 (Full screen on instinct)

4 gigs to 800mb is pretty low. You can always lower the bit rates, or convert to 3g2...Honestly 4 gigs down to 800mb is already very low and i wouldn't recommend any smaller unless you just don't care at all how the quality is. You can also change the resolution as small as a smaller picture, that's the only way your going to go from 4 gig movie to 400mb.  But what your trying to do is going to effect quality greatly.

Ok made some adjustments and lose a little bit of quality. Shrunk a 4 gig .vob file down to little under 400mb. Here are the settings I used.............

Frame Rate: 24
Video Bitrate: 512kbps
Volumes: unlimited
Audio Bitrate: 128kps
Audio Sample Rate: 32khz
Audio: Stereo
Resolution: 432 x 240 (Full screen on instinct)

I will be playing around with settings to get it the best for me. Sound is still great listening through headphones internal speaker is not good enough to listen too. Just fuzzier with the changes I made and voices still match their mouths.

(1st post here, but been reading through this forum for a while now)

Just got the phone, and I really like it so far. Besides some 1st round bugs and oddities, I think it's pretty great. I'm sure an update will resolve most issues.

Anyway, about this thread. Thanks!!! After reading through your initial post I dl'd the demo of that software and within 5 minutes (maybe less), I had converted one of my animations to mp4 and dragged it into the media folder. And what do you know, it worked!!! 1st time, no problems. I am amazed! Quality is great, file size is small. Very happy.

Thanks very much for this how to! And thanks to everyone else for their great posts throughout this forum!

Now, another reason i don't use Sprint Media Player to transfer movies is because no matter if i have the movie encoded already, it encodes it again!...So plug your INSTINCT in USB port and open the SD card folder in MY COMPUTER "icon" or if it pops up drag your encoded movies to the MEDIA folder. If you don't have a media folder, create one and put movies in there...The computer will copy all files you dragged to card. Now the bummer part...The USB is USB 1 so pretty slow,  but beats waiting hrs for your movie to be encoded in Sprint Media Manger.[/color

It's best to use a sd card adapter to copy movies to the media folder. The transfer is much faster. Also, you don't have to worry about missing incomming calls.

1st time poster.. "Hi guys!"

If you have a mac and like podcasts that aren't in mp4, you can download them in mov (quicktime format) then use iMovie to export them (Export -> Using Quicktime) to mp4.  It works wonderfully and every mac that has been purchased in recent years has iMovie.

I was able to make video work that was encoded in linux using ffmpeg.
for 4:3 content "ffmpeg -i inputvideo.avi -vcodec libxvid -s 320x240 -acodec libfaac -y moviename.mp4"
and for 16:9 just change 320 to 432.
to do 2.35 movies you will have to add black bars to top and bottom

I came across a Mobile website that allows you to stream Movies to your phone and it uses the media player to play them, choppy at first but it smooths itself out. I'll have to hunt for it again because my browser randomly shutdown and my history did not save.

I managed to convert my DVD copy of Transformers to MP4 and loaded it onto my 8GB MicroSD card.

I used MobiDVD which is a free program http://mobidvd.xulsoft.org/download.htm

I'm no expert at this stuff and I'm sure someone will come up with a more elegant and faster way of doing this... I will warn you though - the conversion is pretty darn slow.

I chose the following settings:
iPod video
video resolution: 640x360
video bitrate: 800 kbps (it seems most everyone is using 1000 kbps but I think I tried this on an earlier attempt and the video quality was a little jumpy).  I could be talking out of my @$$ though...
Audio quality: Normal

Output format: I think I put 3gp for this but the file is listed as an mp4 file??
Video quality: Normal
Audio quality: normal
resolution: 352 x 288
frame rate: 15 fps

The video is relatively smooth, but you can notice *very* subtle jumping every now and then.
I used the above video settings cause they seemed to just "fill" the screen a little better than 320x240.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the results so far. No obvious audio delay or misregistration yet.
And did I mention that the program is free?!?!  Gotta love that!

Best,
Chris

For those of you wanting a FREE means of converting your Audio and/or Video files who're running Windows, I ran across a site a couple of years ago which is a great index to a lot of free software available. The author of the site goes to great detail in letting you know about each of the products in that particular category, their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their appropriateness to different levels of user experience levels. Anyway, the URL where he reviews the Best Free Audio / Video Format Conversion Program is:

http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-audio-video-format-conversion-program.htm

From that list of products he reviews 3 different products (at the moment):

  • Super (Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer)
  • MediaCoder
  • Any Video Converter

His sight is done in the form of a wiki so you can contribute comments with any personal experience you might have had with one of those particular products or suggest another and they will review it also.

For video conversion, I would suggest using Avanti.  Avanti uses the ffmpeg encoding engine which offers the most control over the output.  It's fast, it's free and although it has a bit of a learning curve, ffmpeg is perhaps the best encoder you could ever hope for.  A word to the wise, ffmpeg is officially linux software, so keeping with the linux tradition, it assumes that you know what you are doing, so it allows you to produce extremely poor quality product assuming that you intended to do it.

I use that, and I personally think it is awesome. Someone here posted a thread on how to do it with videora. Use the search button.
