I just purchases an a 8 gig card. Word to the wise, be careful with those micro SD cards..They are very sensitive and can become corrupted beyond use. You will think its your phone, but its the card. Don't use finger tips, knife, are object to remove card..It is spring loaded so if you press it, it will pop out.

Sprint media manager is the slowest converting app of its time. To convert  xvid/avi/mpeg use a 3rd party app to convert your file to mp4. Mp4 creates a very small file that looks better than 3g2 and for a small screen looks excellent.  Some 3rd party apps encoding engine in the software throws your movies/videos way out of sync!! I personally like WINXMEDIA IPOD MP4 CONVERTER. Best i used and i have tried them all.

The setting you want to use should be a little different than for an ipod, for best picture.  I would use 24 fps "frame rate", video bit rate 1200ps, audio bitrate 320kbps, audio sample rate 48hz and resolution 240 x 432 deinterlaced...Now according to your movies/videos you can adjust settings as needed. To encode an entire regular length movie takes about 30 minutes. Sprint media player no matter if you have dual core or etc...Will take you alittle over an hour.

Now, another reason i don't use Sprint Media Player to transfer movies is because no matter if i have the movie encoded already, it encodes it again!...So plug your INSTINCT in USB port and open the SD card folder in MY COMPUTER "icon" or if it pops up drag your encoded movies to the MEDIA folder. If you don't have a media folder, create one and put movies in there...The computer will copy all files you dragged to card. Now the bummer part...The USB is USB 1 so pretty slow,  but beats waiting hrs for your movie to be encoded in Sprint Media Manger.

Bonus*  Music can be done the  same way...Just drag all your music files and artwork with the m3u to the music folder on the micro SD card. You will have your playlist and looks just like you went through sprint media manager but faster.

I was using Nero Recode (like i regularly do for my ipod videos) and using your same settings and mine, the videos will not work?

The Instinct gets all crazy and the lights shut down and I need to restart it.  It does this on 2 Instincts.  Any idea?

El Kido, each program has it's own encoding engine. Nero must be doing something that is conflicting with your Instincts. Try the program i mentioned in the top post or another MP4 encoding program..But Instinct can handle MP4 movies if encoded correctly.

I use the 3gpconverter.  You can incode in MP4 for Ipod and 3gpp also.  The 3gpp format is a smaller size file but you can opt to do it as QVGA High quality 15fps and it looks just as good as MP4.  Just remmber that if the original is not good quality neither will the rencoded file.  Junk in doesnt come out any better.

Hrm, I know you said that the MP4 File Format is pretty small... but exactly how small are we talking here? A normal (DVD quality) full length movie can run about 700MB to 1GB in size. I'd imagine the reduced resolution would drop the file-size, but I've never actually USED MP4 before, so I have no idea what size we're talking about.

The reason I'm asking is because I do plan on using the Instinct's media options alot, rather it be Sprint TV, Radio, or side-loaded MP3's and Movies... so I kind of want to know how big full length movie is after conversion so I'll know what sized SD card I should pick up to house said movies.

Thanks in advance.

The largest micro SDHC  card you can buy as of now is 8 gigs and you don't want your movies to be 700 mb.  That makes a large impact on how many movies you can store on your card...Also your Instinct want play just any type of file..With those file sizes you mentioned, those are normally xvid or divx sizes and the instinct want play those codecs. MP4 gives you a small compression with a decent picture and a smaller file..With the settings i posted, my files of 700 end up to be alittle bit less than half and in rare cases just a little larger than half. So in all yes you will loose quality, but on a small screen your not sitting back eating popcorn like your watching a blue ray movie  Smiley

Oh and sprint TV and radio dosen't use your memory card.
