So today I went golfing and put my samsung instinct in the (glove?) compartment of the golf cart (if that makes any sense), and to my dismay I find out 3 holes later that the compartment had water in it and my phone was completely soaked. The phone was on when it went into the compartment, and when I pulled it out to see if I had any messages it was off and wouldnt turn on. I immediately removed the battery and let her dry, and as soon as I got home I blow dried it till all the wet spots behind the screen were gone.

The phone has started to developed some "ghost white" spots on the bottom edge on the screen, and this has me concerned. I have a few questions for you guys on this forum:

1) have any of you dropped/left your instinct in water? And if so how did you fix it or did the phone never work again?

2) Are the contacts in the phone saved on the memory card? Is there anyway to salvage them?

Thanks for your time guys, I really hope I can get this phone to work again...

Ummm....There are at least 5 threads about water damage or more....please do a search.... (green box near the top of the screen) about the contacts...I will answer that for you.....Unless you are enrolled in the sprint contact backup thing...then no its not backed up....IT MAY be a free thing that is AUTO on the account...but i had to sign up for it...It is free to sign up for!

Try a bowl of rice, Try opening it up, Try doing a search!

My instinct survived the slip n slide. Water was coming out of the usb port I took out the battery, open all the ports and left it in the sun for 3 hours. Works perfect now never got white spots behind the screen, it might not have completly dried out yet...

The contacts are saved on the phone, not the memory card.  Are you Canadian?  If you are, I don't know what kind of contact backup your carrier has.(if any)  You might look around in the Canadian section of the forum.

I thought sprint had them backed up on their network but only if you signed up for it? (Not on the phone?)

Ya I'm canadian, currently with sasktel. Ill take a look in the canadian forums, thanks.

Currently have the phone in a bag of rice with the battery and sd card out, with all the ports open. It seems to be drying up nicely, white spots are all gone on the screen. Im going to try powering it up tomorrow afternoon/evening, crossing my fingers.

Thanks for all the help!

Well if you have insurance, I've been told that there is a deductible for water damage, but they will change it out. I think he said he paid $100 deduct.

I went swimming with mine. I had taken my wallet and keys out of my pocket, but I had my 2 year old in my arms and my phone being in my back pocket of my shots slipped my mind.  I sat down in the water with him, and about 2 minutes later I jumped back up, having remembered my (now dead) phone.

I took the back and battery out, let it dry the rest of the day, threw it in front of a shop fan in the garage for a while.  2 days later I got brave and put the battery in, it fired up, but the screen didn't seem to work. I have the "ghost white" splotches you're talking about.  The screen would flicker to different screens, but didn't seem to respond to input.  I figured out I could answer calls (half the time). I thought if it dried out more, it might work.  So I took it apart and left it in my car during the day while I was at work.  I live in TX, so it was about 105 outside and well above that inside the car.
The 'white ghosts' were almost gone that night, and I could actually move through my contacts list and make phone calls on purpose.  I did the heat of the day trick another day and started getting decent response out of the screen.  I realized i had a small dead spot on the screen, but I probably had use over 95% of the screen or more.

Well here's an update for all those who are interested. I put the phone in a bag of rice last night with all the ports open and the battery and sd card removed and in same bag. I left the phone there until after work today (6:00), and to my relief it works! No more "ghost white" spots and so far it seems that everything works, except the camera now only takes foggy pictures. Not to worried about that though, I have a camera for taking pics.

Thanks for all the replies and the help!

nice, I'll remember this next time I go swimming. Thanks for the tip.
Though my luck, my kid would come home and boil the rice.

You COULD also try putting your phone in with a loaf of bread....but it between slices and twist the bag and put a twisty tie around it...and put it in there for a day...Bread should work!

Bread is moist, goof ball...

...and it will leave your phone smelling like pumpernickel and rye!  LOL

I once used peanut butter to get gum out of a carpet.  You should spread peanut butter on your SD memory card and insert it into the phone.  Then spread some into all of the other open ports (mic, speaker, headphone jack, USB) and the oil in the peanut butter should get the blurry stuff right out of the camera!
