Is it possible to reset my instinct to the fresh out of the box version of pocket express (to help fix the multiple errors i have) but still keep my contacts, pictures, videos, etc. or do i need to back EVERYTHING up then reset?

and what is the best way of resetting it?

thanks

Just go to your phone's dialer, type in ##rtn#, then select reset, then type in your msl code.  That will hard reset your phone.  You will be prompted to update your applications, just don't update pocket express.  I think if you go to settings, reset, and then select reset phone, it does the same thing.  The phones current firmware version will not change, though.

If you hard reset your phone, you will lose all your personal settings, contacts, downloaded games, etc.

Just so you know.

one other question... after doing a hard reset... it will restore my phone back to it's original setting as if i just opened it out of the box right?

(i'm doing this to fix the errors my phone is having with missing applications and no "tap to add" function when i'm in the fun menu and adding anything from my fun menu to my favorites)

I'm only mentioning this because i'm sure that someone has done this:
(hopefully not your current situation)
---  If you attempted the double memory app, you have serious problems.
last update closed off the extra memory that apps can access.
if you had an app in that 'extra' memory ---it is gone

--- if your 'tap to add' button is missing, most likely it is because you have maxxed out your favorites 'slots'
I don't remember how many you can have, and i'm too lazy to go to other room to get my phone, but there is a limit to the number of favorites you can have.

--- side note: there is also a limit to applications you can have: 255
I installed a small app with diff names, and after the 255th one- it gave me an error- something about 'bad file count'
memory was only 3/4 full at that point (internal memory)
(what confuses me about this, is why would a java os would have a hexidecimal limitation?)

I hope someone else learns from this, i was able to undo anything i did when i was playing with my instinct, and with no current ill-effects. Some of this was due to luck, and some was alot of note taking prior to 'tinkering'. Either way, anyone that 'hacks' their instinct with things they find here, and they don't know what they are doing, they pretty much give up their right to complain about any damage done to the phone when sprint does push an update that locks out your ability to 'undo' any of the afore mentoined hacks.

thank you very much for the extremely informative post.

The truth is that i have not done much tinkering at all and have only added a couple apps (Brain Challenge from sprint and opera mini). I think the only thing that i changed was a suggestion in the tips and tricks section of this board that explains how you can change your setting to make your 3g connection faster using the phones browser, but i do not think that it is really relevant in any way (at least i hope).

The tap to add feature is still around and i can do most things... for some odd reason it is only when i try to add an app on my fun menu as well as a distinct favorite that i'm trying to add that i have this issue. i still have the tap to add button in the favorites menu as well as the web (it just won't let me add an app from games/apps to my favorites:: Application > Fun > games/apps (ie when i want to add opera to my favorites))

i hope that isn't all too confusing, but any advice?

sorry, opening the "tap to add" and going to >>application/fun/game_apps<< works for me.
when i attempt to add opera again i get the message: "it's a duplicate item"
no problems adding anything otherwise.
Take it to a sprint repair and have them do a diagnostic.
even if they cant fix it, they will start a history and the next problem you have (if any) will almost certainly get you a new instinct.
I have no ideas outside of this.
best of luck

not to jump in...but also...tap to add on the fun menu doesn't let you add anything extra except the choices that were already there....
you can only add to your favs.....just incase you we're trying this too...

thanks... i'll prolly just end up doing that but i'm just afraid that they are going to screw up other stuff (which has happened in the past)...

albeit may sound dumb, but i cannot add the facebook or myspace shortcuts so instead i have to use my browser every time (and i hate going through 5 screens just to use an app that should be available at a tap away in regards to the favorites)... besides, its' more about principle than functionality.

Isn't the purpose of a cell phone to make phone calls in the first place? i just want my phone to do everything it's capable of and SHOULD do...

Just add myspace and facebook bookmarks to your favorites and you'll be 1 click away.

that's what i do now... i just don't like the fact that i have a f-ed up phone... i would like it to work how it should...

besides, that isn't as big a problem... trying to get to my favorite apps by going the long route instead of being able to add them to my favorites menu which i use ALL the time is my biggest pet peeve.

i just can't believe i'm the only one with this issue cuz every other problem (and i've had a good amount of issues with the instinct) has been something that someone could relate to and help correct. i hate how i pay 10 bucks a month for insurance and they wanna charge me another 50 just to get a fully functional phone when i shouldn't have this problem in the first place...  Cry
