I am trying to poll people who had 1st Gen iPhone and decided to get Instinct instead of the 2nd Gen iPhone. Which phone do you think is better?

Lets leave GPS and 3G features aside since 1st Gen iphone did not have it otherwise not fair comparison. Features to me that are fair game are plan cost, texting, internet, video viewing and music playing etc. You get the picture.

Compare features only found on the 1st gen iPhone and Instinct to be fair. Once 2nd Gen iPhone come out we can revisit the internet speed, GPS, etc.

The Instinct can be, but it is not yet, the browser and mp3 player are huge disappointments in general. the rest of the phone is easily as good as the iphone and some other features pass it (gps, video rec, mms) but overall the iphone is still better but not by as much as i would have thought.

I think with time, it will become an awesome phone that can be app'd, i mean the phone just came out like what, a few days ago?  Time and patience will hopefully make this phone a staple just like the iphone or any other awesome phone has become.....i wish mine was here though lol  Cry

Personaly i didnt like the iphone that much plus too expensive and i get very good call quality on the instinct and highspeed internet even though the browsers not all great but there will be better one out soon so im not worried about that also i enjoy the gps i used it alot since i travel places everyday, and the new iphone 3g gps will not be as good as the instinct it will no tell you by voice where to turn you just have to keep looking down at the phone to see where you turn, but the instinct tells you by voice where to turn.

Alos remember the IPhone had a bunch of problems at launch as well.

So for a fair comparison it should be People that had the I-Phone at Launch or with-in 30 days not after all the APP/Hacks and Updates.

Lets see how good this thing is in 6 months or so. Don't get me wrong I never thought of switching to AT&T but would have had the IPhone if it would have been anywhere else. So I'm not a H8ter or a Fanboy.

I have also truelly enjoyed every minute with my Instinct

I was wondering this too. But mainly, wondering what was posted above. What is the comparison between both phones at launch. How buggy was the iphone when it first came out. Were there major problems too?
How long did the iphone people have to wait for the firmware and software updates???

I bought iPhone on launch date and bought Instinct a week after launch so pretty close. iPhone had a lot of issues at launch with the activation which was a nightmare with iTunes remember people waiting 2 days or more to activate the phone.

Software was also glitchy on the iPhone and when I called AT&T they had no clue about technical details because you have to call AT&T for some items and Apple for others so a lot of confusion.

Instinct launch was much smoother and to be honest it is probably just as buggy as the iPhone. Sprint definitely did better job with the launch date. My phone was activated right away and pretty much all features work fine.

I hate the Instinct web browser and given that people loved the iPhone browser got so much good feedback why would Sprint come up with such a crappy one? It is very slow as well so those high internet speeds are BS at least I am not getting them.

Really?  I'm in South Carolina of all places, and my phone internet is just as fast as my friends mid tier broadband from Time Warner Cable.  I would think that Jersey would be wired up for faster service that SC.

Today I gave internet another chance and it seemed fast (not blazing speed but good enough, faster than EDGE iPhone for sure).

I think that it depends if you are in good coverage area getting EVDO or the slow network. Unfortunately looking at Instinct its hard to tell what kinda data network you are using. But today I was getting 5 bars and the internet was fast.

The web browser is crappy as it does not render a lot of pages that I go to correctly. Facebook is decent but Myspace even mobile site does not work properly. There are other sites as well. They have a lot of work to do on the browser OR they need to get Opera Professional compatible like HTC Diamond did. They worked with Opera so they  customized their browser for the device or something like that.

To be honest I like Opera Professional better than Safari on iPhone.

I think it is fair to say that trying to compare the Instinct to an iPhone is fruitless.  I will never be the envy of an iPhone owner.  What do I have over them?  Better GPS and Live Search.  Pfft.

If they can remedy all the half brewed "features", I will be proud to show this off to my iPhone fanboys.

If the iPhone never existed, this would, indeed, be THE phone to be seen with (when it's finished).

Yea i have to agree.  Give it some time and this phone can be one "monster  Shocked" of a phone.  I think, IMHO, that peeps who purchased this phone when it first came out, were expecting a knock out iphone killer.  Now, sprint did push this phone hard, and people should get what they paid for, but, sometimes patience is a virtue.  Once apps, updates and the few bugs are worked out, the instinct will hopefully, become a staple in the sprint line up.  If not, well than, sprint better start pushing the new HTC diamond and rapheal (touch pro i think) to save them, cause it will be downhill from there.......... Cry Undecided Huh?

the problem is, even with all the hype, marketing, etc, this phone will fade out in a few years (or less) when something better comes along. When that happens, they are unlikely to keep the same OS, or focus on preserving compatibility with older phones/older software.

the iPhone has a following, and with each new iteration, there will always be new software, applications, and updates to old software to make it work. When the instinct gets old (which, at today's pace, could be as soon as 6 months to a year from now), developers are unlikely to continue creating software for it, and will instead focus their efforts on creating software for 'the next big thing' in phones.

realistically, i think when phones start coming loaded with Android...then the iPhone may have some stiff competition.
