I stumbled across this today while hoping to find the results of the Sprint contest.  It was an app that fixes one of the common complaints with uploading YouTube videos:

He faces the same issue as all other independent developers - the need for a $5000 PDP membership to certify the app, since it makes use of the protected camera controls - so is not planning on releasing it.

Seems like the best way to shut down independent creativity is to put them 5000 dollars in the hole before they make one penny for it.

Good find KB.  That shows just how hard Sprint is trying to make features better.  I hope they do something about it.

That was really messed up and stupid of Sprint...here was someone that had a really creative application which would have benefited everyone, including Sprint (by enticing people to buy the phone)...but what does Sprint do?...shut him down...sorry mate..i wish he would still write that application for people to use.. that was something i would have gladly paid for.

Actually I can understand why it wasn't a winner - what he really did was provide a fix for a bug or incompatibility, rather than an entirely new feature.  Of course, Sprint can take the IP from his work and use that to create the fix now... good for users, bad for him Sad

If he is not going to make money off app why does he not post it on the forum and let people donate if they are happy with it similar to KB

I believe because it requires access to the "signed" portions of the phone. KB's apps to my knowledge have been standalone apps that don't really use any of the built in parts of the phone (e.g. GPS, Camera) in order to use those parts, a programmer is required to pay $5000. Crazy huh!

pwagner is correct about the signing, and the app's author had another valid concern.  The entry form for the contest stated that all rights to the code went to Sprint if you entered it.  They later backed off on that, but only in a posting on the developer forum, which could have been forged and probably wouldn't hold up in court anyway since it wasn't part of the signed contract.  So, he believes he doesn't have the right to post the code.

so basically the app contest was a way to get a bunch of code and only give a couple of prizes which they will quickly recoup. Yay IP piracy!

If there even really is an app contest anymore. All mention of it has been removed from all Sprint websites, and the "winner announcement date" has come and gone.

He's full of crap or he's heavy on the keyboard (typo'ed too many 0's).

Its only $499 a yr and the total goes directly to Verisign to digitally sign the application.

See below:  I just had this fight and sprint cleared it up for me in great detail.

Sprint has restricted access to certain functionality provided to most MIDP 2.0 devices.  This functionality consists of:
JSR-135 Mobile Media 1.1 API
JSR-120 Wireless Messaging 1.1 API
JSR-75 Personal information Management
JSR-179 Location API
Qualcomm Java Application Extensions (QJAE) Location API
To access the above restricted API's, you may need to complete some pre-work.  If you do not already have a certificate from VeriSign, then you must request a Java Class 3 signed certificate at a cost of $499.00 a year paid to VeriSign.

Actually the $5000/year paid to Sprint for membership in the PDP is correct.  I had originally thought the same as you, because Sprint is not really forthcoming with all the necessary info.  All a Verisign certificate will let you do is sign an app for use on developer-enabled phones.  There is no point in getting one anyway because one comes for free with the Sprint WTK.

Only Sprint can sign an app with their "production certificate" for use with production phones.  You either have to be a "Sprint Partner" or a PDP member to get this done.

See http://www.instinct-samsung.com/index.php/topic,4868.0.html for more info.
