I am not a very technical person so this question might be dumb.  Would it be possible for the instinct to have Wifi capabilities through a software update?

Negative. The Instinct does not contain any wifi hardware. So no, software wouldn't help a lick. Sorry...

If you need a signal boost Sprint sells hardware to fix that problem. However, the phone works off the Sprint Network

Well let's not forget the microSD card slot?! Theoretically a microSD Wifi card could work as long as the Instinct's OS could recognize it. However, this idea is very far fetched as there are no current developments for such a thing.

I have not heard of a microSD WIFI card. Does one exist? Irregardless I can't imagine that the phone would even know how to interpret those signals.

Agreed, but my question regards MICRO sd WIFI.

However having a SD WIFI card in general is amazing.

Yeah the do exist, however, they are not easy to find. The only one I can find any information for is the Spectec 802.11 b/g version. I do believe the card alone will cost you upwards to $80. Not really a cost effective way to get Wifi. But I think you're right still. Even if someone could get their hands on the card, I'm not sure the Instinct would know what to do with it. I'd really be interested in hearing of someone's attempt at it though...

Perhaps one of our talented programmers can write a driver and a protocol stack for that bad boy?  Cheesy

I think it's a little more complicated than that. Although writing a driver and protocol stacks for it is easy, getting the BREW OS to learn how to use it is completely different. Not to mention, this wifi card would drain the battery like Oprah thru a buffet. But still, I'm curious too. Smiley

Not requiring WiFi is one of the advantages of our phones. Have you hung out with iPhone users? Always whining about their network or having to choose to connect? That was a huge selling point for me was not having to worry about that. Maybe in 10 years our WiFi infrastructure will be such that it won't matter but it certainly is more trouble than it is worth.

That I DEFINITELY agree with 100%. The current Wifi standard is absolutely horrible. A buddy of mine has an iPhone and in the time it takes him to load one page with either Wifi or 3G, I've logged in, checked my mail, sent a reply and made a phone call to Elvis. Wifi would be a very nice addition in the future but not necessary. Smiley
