Earthlink is my ISP.  I am able to receive messages, however, I cannot send.  Both Sprint and Earthlink acknowledge this is a problem.  Sprint told me they are not fixing the problem.  So...I found a work around.

If I want to send an email, I first make sure that the person is in my "Contacts." If not, I add them, making sure to enter their name and email address.  Then, using the "Speech to Action" button on the phone, I say, "send text to Dan Email."  The open box appears for my message.  I type in my message, hit "send" and off it goes.  When received, the email shows it is from your phone number "541480####@message..." (I couldn't read the rest).  If the receiver replies to the email, it comes back to your phone as a text message.  I don't send many emails from my phone, although there are times when I need to, so this might be a solution until Sprint can figure out what to do.  The woman I spoke with at Sprint, on August 1, 2008, said that as long as I own the phone, I will never be able to send emails through my Earthlink account.  I may end up setting up a Yahoo account and having my messages forwarded through that account, but for now this work around may be all I need.

Okay, please forgive me if I am repeating anything someone else has said.

I have Verizon Fios for my intenet email (......@verizon.net)  I too was having the same issues where I could receive emails, but couldn't send.  Here is what I did to fix the issue.

1) Install Desktop Connector provided by Sprint
2) DESKTOP CONNECTOR:
   a. Login Tab
       - Input your Sprint Mobile email username and password you set up when creating the account
       - Preferences, check Remember my password and Launch on Windows startup

   b. Messaging Tab
-Check Enable mobile access to mail and contacts
       - Select your corporate messaging application = Standard POP3 Server
       - POP3 User Name = (Your Username)@verizon.net
       - POP3 Password = (Your Verizon Email Password)
          *  Server Settings:
               - Display Name = Your name
               - E-mail Address = (Your Username)@verizon.net
               - Incoming mail POP3 server = incoming.verizon.net
               - POP3 Port = 110
               - Outgoing mail SMTP server = outgoing.verizon.net
               - SMTP Port = 25
               - Leave the Use SSL unchecked.
               - Check Requires Auth
                   * Auth Settings...:
                        - Check Log on using
                        - Account name = (Your Username)@verizon.net
                        - Password = (Your Verizon Email Password)

Click OK, OK, OK and your desktop connector should connect.  Once this is done, you should be able to start sending emails from your Instinct.  At least it did for me.

Good luck!

Two things.

First there was a update this morning that I installed but I have no idea what it did. I still can not send email through my roadrunner account.

Second regarding the previous poster, I do not know what desktop connector is, nor can I find it. The CD that came with the phone includes media manager which I installed sucessfully, Connection manager which is to use the phone as a modem which I dont need. Sprint Desktop Sync which I also dont use because I do not have Microfost Office. I would love to try his solution if he can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks Spunky. What I had to do was create a GMAIL account and set the rule in outlook to forward all my incoming emails to it.  This is the only way I can get my email, but to respond, I have to use the gmail account or the pcs account.  Its so f**king annoying!!!  Huh? I hope they fix this quick if comcast and roadrunner can be set up why cant COX?

In Gmail, under settings -> accounts you can add an email address which lets your reply as any email address.  I added my work email to my gmail account but havent gotten a chance to see if it works on the instinct.  It works through regular email so it should.

I just stuck in the install cd for the instinct to get the desktop connector. It started lnstalling everything fine till it got to the connector at that point it said it was a mistake to say the conector was part of the instinct software and had a big red line through the option and kindly asked that you go to the link to purchase broad band cards, Hmmmm.  So i can't even install it to try the work around by entering it thru there? Is there another place to get this program other than the cd? If some could post it that would be great.  i pay for push email with emailtreo.com (carry over from palm days) I don't want to change my email address, period! So all my emailtreo mail is forwarded to my gmail wich then goes to the phone ( i need to try and  see if i can set it up IMAP or not? The funny thing is my gmail is forarded to emailtreo then emailtreo forwards it back to mail so it can reach my phone, this was set up this way befor gmail had push. i HATE jacking with email set ups, they confuse me for some reason. Sprint knew this going in and that ticks me off. Ijust wanted something simple which it is for the most part after my touch wm6 anything seems to be,ha. I talked with cs today, no help. sent a prl update to me that didn't even take. I am tired. i think we should start a thread (may be one? ) on what a smart dumb phone should have or a dumb smart phone should have as just the basics.

Folks have communicated in other posts that apparently Roadrunner (and many other cable ISPs) do not trust SMTP coming from outside their cable network due to SPAM concerns.

I had recently sent email to Sprint support specifically asking about any plans to work a trust with Roadrunner. They just replied to me. They indicated they don't know of any plans to do so. (At least that level of support does not know of any plans:-)

FYI, With today's email app update, as expected, no change in send via RR :-) I suspect the update probably just fixed some other misc "glitches". Suggest you keep an eye on the official Update Thread.

Yeah, my CD did not work either.  I had to go to https://sprintce.sprintpcs.com/subscriber/login.stp to download it.

Well here is my issue with this whole road runner thing. When I had my Q it worked perfectly to send and recieve email through road runners smtp server. So I will say this again, this IS NOT a road runner issue its a Instinct issue.

I refuse to believe that at the exact moment I turned off my Q and turned on my Instinct is the exact moment that raod runner changed something with their smtp server.

I sure hope you are correct! The strange thing is that my son is the only RR customer I know who has it working. Same settings same Sprint and RR Master accounts! I assumed it was possibly that his account was on a different RR server that was accidentally set to allow it. Very strange!

I had not heard that anyone had it working from other phone models. Interesting.

The Instinct is missing the setting that would allow you to include a different username and password for the outgoing SMTP server. Folks with the Mogul reported on another board that they were able to send RR mail by entering the Sprint SMTP server info for outgoing and using their PCS login info.

I am a RR account holder and I haven't tried this yet, but what if your Sprint info was changed to match your RR username/password? It would sound feasible that if the user/pass combo was exactly the same for both RR and Sprint, it might work.

Else, there is presently no direct way to send via the Instinct for RR. Some members have had success using icmail -- search this site for info on that to see if it might work for you.

Thanks stormygal_indy. I have followed the subject for quite a while and seen many workarounds. Appreciate your comment. While I agree that no one SHOULD be able to send direct via RR's SMTP server from their phone due to RR policy, my son swears it is working for him. He used the standard settings I gave him because he did not know them. I still can't understand how. Too bad we can't (yet) view POP/SMTP settings after the fact :-) That's why I agree with the basic answer that it won't work. (I also try to keep an open mind. Hope mentioning my son's experience does not give anyone false hope.)

I just wish Sprint and the ISPs would try and work out some server "trusts". With so many folks going to "web mail" it seems less than likely. What's would be the benefit to Sprint? If they were serious about the subject would they be discontinuing their mail server? Oh well.

I seem to be having the exact opposite problem as everyone else. I am using Comcast, and up until 3 days ago was able to send and receive my Comcast email through my instinct just fine. Now I am only able to send email. I can't receive anything. I went into my Comcast inbox from my PC and have had 78 emails come through in the last 3 days, not one of them came to my Instinct.

I've used all the recommended settings noted above in this thread and others, but none seem to work. I've swapped out the battery, turned it on / off, performed all the available updates, etc.

When I spoke to Sprint about this - they were absolutely clueless. Short of taking it back to the Sprint store and swapping it out - I've pretty much run out of ideas. Is there something little I may be missing here? Since I can send email fine - I would assume that receiving it shouldn't be a problem. And the fact that it worked absolutely fine for the last month leads me to believe it is just some small setting that may have been changed. Any info would be great

Thanks - glad to be a new member here after lurking for a month!

Everyone that has a cable ISP provider with the Instinct email client can use smtp.sprintpcs.com as their outgoing server. Sprint has allowed all instinct clients to pass through this server without authentication. So you can have a different set of credentias, which means you can use this on any pop/imap account that you choose.
