I am having the same issue with my instinct. I am trying to set up a comcast web account and finally got these settings to work... kinda

Incoming : mail.comcast.net
               SSL ON
Everything else typed in case sensitive
Outgoing : smtp.comcast.net
               SSL ON
               SMTP AUTH ON
Everything else typed in case sensitive

Mail came in just fine. Instinct will download the first 25 messages (most recent). I can start a reply but the message will not send and gives me a network error.

I tried playing with SSL  and  SMTP AUTH settings to get a combo that worked and even tried tweaking the port number but my mail just wont send. I am seeking for a solution but I know you all who have posted on this thread too are having the same/similary problems. I suppose we can all wait together but atleast I can contribute my problem to this thread.

take care

Ok, it seems if you put in your entire email address where it asks for your account name and then smtp port from 25 to 587 and set smtp authorization to on, it will work fine. It does for me anyways.

I had the same problems setting up a roadrunner account. I called Sprint. The tech had no clue; he read through several reports and then told me that the major cable companies denied access for cell phone email (something to that effect). He suggested I get a yahoo, gmail or another service. I did open a gmail account and set it to fetch my email from roadrunner and a business account. Sucess! Now everything works fine. I couldn't get my Treo to work with my roadrunner email; I had to use a third party software. This might explain the problem.

I looked at my gmail account and do not see anywhere to make a setting adjustment for gmail to retrieve RR mail.  How did you do that with your gmail account?

Would you mind providing me with the steps you used to setup the gmail account?  I have a gmail account that I rarely use and would like to use it to retrieve my RR like you did.  Thanks.
Go to your Gmail account. At the top right of the screen you will see "Settings." Click on that. The settings screen has several options--select accounts. Go to "Get mail from other accounts." Follow the directions. After you complete this, you should be able to get your roadrunner email on your Instinct and reply.

Go to Gmail. At the top right you will see "Settings." Click here. The new screen has several options--chose "accounts." Scroll down to "Get mail from other accounts." Follow the directions. You should now be able to send and receive.

Thanks butterbean!  Got my gmail to retrieve my RR messages and can reply to them!  This is a great workaround and was very easy to do!   Grin

butterbean, when you reply to RR messages from gmail, does the recipient see the reply as your RR name or your gmail name?  My replies to RR messages show as coming from gmail, not from RR.  How can I change it to look like my reply is from RR?  Thanks.

butterbean........you there?  I figured out how to set gmail to use either my gmail or RR for the reply address, which works in the program itself, but the phone doesn't provide that option when replying to gmail/RR messages from my phone.  When you reply to RR messages from your phone, does it show your gmail address?

onthehunt, why not send butterbean a private message instead of adding to this post? They'll get an alert that there's a message awaiting them and can respond directly to you.

There is a bug with the instinct.  Many cable internet providers block their outgoing e-mail server if you are not connected to your home modem to prevent spammers.  The normal resolution would be to use sprints outgoing e-mail server (smtp) in its place.  To use 2 different servers would require you to enter your other user id and password (sprint mail) for the outgoing internet server.  To do this, you would set the "use SMTP Auth" to ON.  The bug is, even if you set it to ON, it does not prompt you for the outgoing e-mail server user id and password.  Instead it tries to use the incoming server user id and password.  It then thinks the password has changed and prompts you to re-enter the password.  It would work if both server's user id and passwords were the same, but unfortunately we cannot always match our sprint e-mail with our home e-mail user id's and passwords.  Both have to match so it can trick the system.  It has taken me about 20 hours of phone and internet research this weekend to figure this out.  My biggest resource will be copied below.  Please contact sprint and samsung so they will be forced to make this fix a priority.  This will not get resolved quickly unless they realize how important of an issue this is.  PLEASE SPEAK UP!

Danny (Everything after this was obtained from the Instinct Blog on sprint.com)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The below is a continuing notice from a post message I replied to earlier regarding the issue with not being able to send emails from the Instint, but I wanted to put the word out for others.  Please see the below....

Just got off the phone with another level 3 technician at Samsung about this issue and wanted to pass on the latest as promised.  The tech informed me that they are still researching the issue and that they've received several other calls from users with this issue after I called and they are working to get this resolved.  They don't have an ETA as of yet, but he did state that he'd call me back today with any info.  I would advise that anyone with this issue contact Samsung's mobile center at 1-888-987-4357 and let them know.  The more calls they receive about this issue, the quicker they will be in attempting to find a resolution.  If I do receive a call back today on this though, I'll be sure to post that here.  Thanks

Just an FYI though, for those giving the various server settings as a resolution for this issue that will only work if your username and password information is the exact same for both your incoming and outgoing servers.  However, for the multiude of others out there with a different username/password for the outgoing SMTP server or have a completely different SMTP server address and username/password for it due to their ISP not allowing traffic relay from a cell phone, this won't work because the Instint doesn't give you an option during the POP setup to enter a username and password combination for the SMTP server settings.  Instead, it attempts to use the exact same username/password information that you setup for your incoming mail server and because of this will fail every time no matter what you do.  Again, I would advise that anyone with this issue contact Samsung's mobile center at 1-888-987-4357 and let them know.

Don't take this discussion offline - I am having the same issue!!! I am using gmail as a "proxy" for my work email. I have my work email setup to copy incoming messages automatically to gmail, which is then downloaded to Instinct. When I reply, I want it to appear as my work email, NOT the current: myname@gmail.com. I have already gone into gmail Account Settings and added my work email as the default "from" email. It works just like it should when emailing directly from gmail, but not from the phone.

I need help!

Unfortunately folks, it looks like Sprint planned it this way.  Why else would they have the Desktop Connector software with POP\SMTP settings?  This is especially frustrating for those of us coming from devices like Touch, Mogul, Palm, etc. where you basically have an email client with full configuration.  I love the instinct for its simplicity and style which is exactly why my Touch is on eBay right now.  Unfortunately, those of us wanting just a bit more control of the email functions suffer.

So in review:

- Most ISPs like cable, DSL don't allow SMTP access off of their network (i.e. your phone on Sprint's network)
- Instinct doesn't allow separate POP and SMTP configuration for a single email account (so you can't send directly from your phone through your ISP account)
- DesktopConnector available through a post earlier in this thread is the only way to access these types of accounts at this time. (Sets up a relay from your ISP server to a Sprint server and back again)
- Everyone with an Instinct should be on an "Everything" plan so this service is included free.

I hope this helps others from having to struggle through reading this thread or the frustration that the rest of us have gone through trying to "proxy" or auto-forward our accounts.

Comcast allows off network access to the outgoing email server. Just tested it to make sure I wasn't crazy on my still active Helio phone. And Helio (or Virgin Mobile now) leases their network from Sprint.
